Job summary

City of Minneapolis is seeking an HVAC and facilities maintenance technician for the Minneapolis Convention Center. The role focuses on operating, maintaining, and repairing the building's HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and support systems to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for guests and staff.

You will diagnose issues, perform preventive maintenance, and coordinate with the building automation system, while complying with safety and licensing requirements, including a MN boiler license.

Qualifications

• 3 years of post-school education in HVAC control systems.
• At least 3 years of related experience with boiler license (MN Class 2-C).

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain and repair HVAC systems including air handling units, fan coil units, and related valves.
• Maintain and repair high-pressure steam system for building heat and kitchen.
• Provide operational diagnostics for building automation system to control temperature in exhibition halls, auditorium, ballrooms, meeting rooms, concourses, and offices.
• Maintain plumbing systems including touchless toilets, urinals, faucets, and related fixtures.
• Inspect and maintain emergency generator and fire sprinkler pumps; test dry-fire sprinkler system.
• Replace extinguishers and assist with inspections.
• Facility maintenance of operable wall panels.
• Maintain and repair overhead rollup doors.
• Maintain fleet equipment (lifts, forklifts, tugs, lifts).
• Refrigeration maintenance (ice machines, walk-ins, fountains).
• Troubleshoot low-voltage building automation systems.
• Perform preventive maintenance on schedule.
• Welding, soldering and brazing as required.

Salary

Anticipated salary for this position is $38.72/hour, depending on qualifications. This posting was amended on 8/27/2026 to reflect the current hourly pay of $38.72. This will increase to $39.88 on 10/01/2026.

Differentials

• Monday through Friday Shift Differential - An additional $1.93/hour shall be paid, for all hours worked to employee whose regularly scheduled shift begins between the hours of 11:00am and 6:00am.
• Saturday and Sunday Shift Differential - Provided that a weekend shift differential shall be paid, to all employees whose regularly scheduled shifts begin within these hours; 1st Shift (6:00am and 1:59pm) $1.63 per hour, 2nd Shift (2:00pm and 8:59pm) $2.17 and 3rd Shift (9:00pm and 5:59am) $2.47.

Responsibilities

1. Operate, maintain and repair the 109 air handling units, 69 fan coil units, numerous exhaust and transfer fans. This includes repair and replacement of coils, heating and cooling valves, actuators, dampers, ball and gates valves.
2. Operate, maintain and repair the High-Pressure steam system which is utilized to provide year around building heat and supply steam to the commercial kitchen.
3. Provide essential support to maintain optimal HVAC system functions.
4. Provide operational diagnostics on the Building Automation System to ensure proper temperature in the occupied spaces which consist of the exhibition halls, auditorium, ballrooms, meeting rooms, concourses, and office spaces.
5. Ensure proper operation of plumbing systems throughout the building including the 350+ touchless toilets, urinals, flushometers, soap dispensers, faucets. Other plumbing duties include upkeep and repair of waste lines, dishwashers, and automatic drinking fountains/bottle filler stations, cartridge filter replacement on water supply lines.
6. Emergency generator and fire sprinkler system pumps – perform system safety checks and load testing as required. Maintenance of dry-fire sprinkler system includes dry valves, air compressors, tamper valve/flow switches and fuel tanks.
7. Knowledge of fire extinguisher types – replace discharged extinguishers with correct replacements. Provide assistance with annual testing and inspection of hundreds of extinguishers throughout the facility with contractor.
8. Facilities maintenance – maintain and adjust operable wall panels in the meeting rooms.
9. Maintain and repair overhead rollup doors throughout building.
10. Perform maintenance and repair on large fleet of battery-powered lifts, forklifts, Cushman tugs and scissors/articulating lifts.
11. Refrigeration – Perform maintenance and repairs on various refrigeration units including ice machines, walk-in coolers/freezers and drinking fountains.
12. Provide troubleshooting and maintenance on low-voltage building automation systems throughout the facility.
13. Perform preventative maintenance scheduled daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/yearly.
14. Perform welding, soldering, brazing and metal fabrication as required.
15. Make estimates and keep records of all time and materials including ordering materials and submitting reports. Maintain logs of temperatures, pressures and other records for monitoring of equipment statuses.

Working Conditions

Must have the ability to walk or stand for long periods of time. Exposure to physical tasks and hazardous conditions such as high voltage equipment, chemicals, fumes, dust, confined spaces, extreme hot and cold temperature conditions, heights including rooftops and catwalks, poor lighting conditions, burn hazards and loud noises.

Education

3 years of post-school education, specialized training, trades apprenticeship or equivalent in Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning (HVAC) control systems.

Experience

At least 3 years of related experience with a minimum of 1 year with a boiler license.

Licenses/Certificates

State of MN Class 2-C Boiler License

Selection Process

Eligible List Statement
