Job summary

MatX in Mountain View seeks a senior System Software Engineer to own OpenBMC firmware for AI compute boards and to lead low-level software from bring-up to production. You will drive Yocto builds, device trees, and kernel drivers while collaborating with hardware and security teams on robust, secure firmware.

You will contribute to OpenBMC and related open-source projects, expanding management interfaces and ensuring high-quality firmware across platforms.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in BMC firmware and embedded Linux development, with hands-on OpenBMC experience from board bring-up through production.
• Strong C/C++ and Python or Bash; deep Linux fundamentals spanning user space, the driver model, and kernel internals.
• Proficient with Yocto/OpenEmbedded, U-Boot, and device trees; experience with BMC SoCs such as ASPEED or Nuvoton.
• Board bring-up experience with low-level buses and interfaces: I2C/I3C, SPI, eSPI/LPC, SMBus, UART, PCIe, JTAG.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and ship OpenBMC firmware for our custom compute boards, managing AI ASICs from bring-up to production.
• Own the Yocto/OpenEmbedded-based build, board port, and device trees for our BMC SoC.
• Develop platform manageability features: telemetry, inventory, event logging, thermal/power management, and RAS.
• Build management interfaces on Redfish, IPMI, and DMTF protocols including out-of-band management.
• Implement firmware update, secure boot, and attestation flows with silicon and security teams.
• Write and bring up Linux kernel drivers and D-Bus services; debug across hardware/firmware boundaries.
• Influence board and ASIC design for better manageability and debuggability.
• Upstream improvements to OpenBMC; build CI, test automation, and tooling.
