DEFINITION

Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled duties in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City parks, open space, trails, and landscaped areas; perform skilled landscape maintenance. This position must work well independently and with teams while providing customer service and human relations skills which support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. Waters, mows, weeds, trims, renovates and fertilizes open space areas.
2. Plants, waters and maintains landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns.
3. Trims and prunes bushes, trees and shrubs; applies herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides safely; maintains records of fertilizers and chemicals used.
4. Performs snow removal duties as required.
5. Empties trash cans, picks up litter, and performs trail maintenance.
6. Constructs and installs fencing, soft-surface trails, trail amenities, picnic tables, and concrete walkways and decking.
7. Operates park maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front loaders, and power tools such as mowers, edgers, and blowers; maintains hand tools and assigned equipment.
8. Rakes leaves and clears debris from walks, fields, courts and other facilities.
9. Responds to requests and inquiries from the public.
10. Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project.
11. Utilizes proper safety precautions related to work performed.
12. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

1. Current methods, techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of landscaped areas and open spaces.
2. Uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.
3. Safe work practices.

Ability to:

1. Perform semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in parks, cemeteries, and other planted areas.
2. Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations.
3. Effectively lead other workers as assigned.
4. Work independently in the absence of supervision.
5. Identify and correct landscape problems early in their development.
6. Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
7. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Maintenance Worker I: High School diploma or equivalent. One (1) year of experience in parks, cemetery, landscaping, or closely related field desirable.
Maintenance Worker II: High School diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing landscape maintenance and repair.
Maintenance Worker III: High School diploma or equivalent and Associate's Degree with four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience performing landscape maintenance and repair. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Bachelor's Degree preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT

Must have the ability to perform heavy manual labor: shoveling, digging, lifting, pushing, pulling, and dragging. Lift and carry up to 80 pounds. Stoop, bend, and crouch for extended periods of time. Work in confined spaces. Work in extreme temperature conditions including extreme heat (>100 degrees) and extreme cold (<10 degrees).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license with a safe driving record.
Possession of or ability to obtain required certification(s), within 6 months of hire.
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Ability to complete FEMA ICS 100 and IS 700 training within six (6) months of hire.
