The newly formed School of Computing is entering a period of significant growth. As one of the three founding departments of the School of Computing, and as part of this growth process, the Department of Information (iSchool) at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for tenured and tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, to begin Fall 2027. Candidates will be expected to conduct innovative and impactful research and to teach at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Our tenure-track and tenured faculty normally have a 2/1 teaching load, with opportunities for course releases and buyouts. Salaries are competitive.

The iSchool is one of three founding departments of UT's new School of Computing, alongside Computer Science and Statistics and Data Science. Research Resources and Context

UT Austin has a world-class reputation for AI research and education. The university's online MS in Artificial Intelligence is the largest AI program at any tier-one university, complementing existing online master's programs in computer science and data science. The Center for Generative AI hosts the largest academic GPU cluster in the world and includes one of our faculty members on its team. The Texas Advanced Computing Center provides world-class AI compute resources and received a $457M award from the National Science Foundation to create a new leadership-class computing facility. UT also leads the $20M NSF AI Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning, the $20M NSF-Simons AI Institute for Cosmic Origins, and the $30M NSF Center for Human and Robot Co-Adaptation. All three involve our faculty.

Health is among the most active areas of AI work at UT Austin. Dell Medical School launched a new Department of Quantitative and Systems Health Sciences in August 2026, integrating artificial intelligence, data science, and systems-level approaches to advanced discovery and health care innovation. Dell Med, the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the College of Pharmacy are all on the same campus, and our faculty collaborate with colleagues across them on consumer health informatics, biomedical data, and the social dimensions of health. Strengthening these connections is a priority for the School of Computing, including through joint appointments.

Responsible AI is central to UT Austin's vision for these technologies. Good Systems, the university's campus-wide responsible AI initiative, includes more than 120 researchers across 30 academic units and integrates technology, policy, law, and ethics in the pursuit of societal good. Our faculty have played a prominent role in Good Systems, serving on its leadership team and leading its core research projects. Two of our faculty secured a five-year, $3M NSF Research Traineeship award addressing the integration of responsible and ethical AI throughout the development, design, and deployment of AI technologies, which led to a new cross-campus Graduate Portfolio Program in Ethical AI. Additional work on responsible AI in the Department includes research on AI policy, design, auditing, and data collection and stewardship, including the ethical sourcing of AI training data.

The Department's Information Experience Lab supports research on how people seek, evaluate, and use information, with eye-tracking, physiological measures, and usability facilities. The lab is a shared resource for work in information behavior, human-computer interaction, and human-centered data science, and it is available to faculty across the university.

Austin is an unusually rich setting for archival research and education, featuring the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library. UTAustin is home to the Harry Ransom Center, the Briscoe Center for American History, and the LLILAS Benson Latin American Collections. Within the Department, our Conservation Lab supports hands-on teaching and research in the care and treatment of collections.

We study how people organize, preserve, and trust information; how technology meets the people who use it; and how computing and society shape one another.

Qualifications

Candidates for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor with tenure must have a substantial record of research, teaching, and service commensurate with that rank at a leading research university.
