Position Summary

Indiana University Bloomington ( IUB ) invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track assistant, associate, or full professor in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, in the field of robotics. We seek exceptional researchers and educators whose work advances the science and engineering of intelligent, embodied systems and their societal applications. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to the new Bachelor of Science in Robotics degree, shaping the next generation of roboticists through research-driven teaching and mentoring.

We welcome applicants whose research advances human-centered robotics and human–robot interaction. We are particularly interested in scholarship in these areas addressing one or more of three interconnected themes:

  • Interaction and collaboration: physical, haptic, and multimodal interaction; human–robot teaming; shared autonomy; and the design and study of interactive robotic systems.
  • Embodied intelligence and mobility: robot design and control, humanoid robotics, whole-body control, and wearable robotic systems.
  • Robotics in human environments: assistive, rehabilitation, healthcare, and field robotics, including the development, deployment, and study of robotic systems in real-world settings.

We also welcome applicants whose work bridges these themes or brings complementary perspectives, methods, and application domains that broaden the scope of human-centered robotics at IUB.

We encourage applications from scholars who apply interdisciplinary perspectives and share important research overlap with current IUB scholars while also offering new dimensions that will expand and strengthen IUB’s robotics research program.

This 10‑month appointment would ideally start August 1, 2027, although an earlier or later start date is negotiable. Applications received by November 15, 2026, will receive full consideration, and applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

Responsibilities: Tenured/tenure-track faculty at Indiana University Bloomington are expected to substantially contribute to the overall academic excellence of their department by developing and/or maintaining a robust research portfolio including pursuing and obtaining major extramural research funding to conduct cutting‑edge research both as a corresponding principal investigator and a collaborating investigator; teaching and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students as designated by the department chairperson; and actively providing service within the department, school and university alongside active engagement with the profession and/or the community.

This position is located on the campus in Bloomington, Indiana, and a successful candidate is expected to work on the IUB campus to allow full engagement with the department, school, campus, and community. Indiana University bases its tenure and promotion recommendations upon performance in three areas including research, teaching, and service. All individuals hired through this initiative are expected to excel in research and provide strong performance in teaching and service.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should possess a PhD in human-robot interaction, robotics, computer science, engineering, cognitive science (or a related field) and be committed to excellence in scholarship and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Candidates for a position with tenure must demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for an appointment w/tenure, including extramurally funded research as a corresponding principal investigator, current funding or strong potential to secure external funding, established record of publications and scholarly work, and experience leading sizeable research initiatives.

All queries about the position or the application procedures should be addressed to Dr. Lantao Liu, search chairperson, or Dr. Cindy Broderick, search coordinator, at faculty1@iu.edu.

Before a conditional offer of employment with tenure is finalized, candidates will be asked to disclose any pending investigations or previous findings of sexual or professional misconduct. They will also be required to authorize an inquiry by IUB with all current and former employers along these lines. The relevance of information disclosed or ascertained in the context of this process to a candidate’s eligibility for hire will be evaluated by IUB on a case‑by‑case basis. Applicants should be aware, however, that IUB takes the matters of sexual and professional misconduct very seriously.
