Job summary

Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark, part of Prime Healthcare, is seeking an Operating Room Technician (OR Tech) for full-time daytime hours. The role supports the surgical team by preparing sterile instruments and maintaining the sterile field throughout procedures.

The ideal candidate has cardiac surgery experience, ORT training or equivalent, and a current BLS certificate. Competitive compensation is offered with a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Must be a cardiac surgical technician with experience in open heart surgery.
• High School Diploma or Equivalent or related experience required for new hires effective April 2014.
• Graduate of an ORT training program or on the job training with a minimum of 3 years experience (surgical setting preferred).
• Experience in scrubbing minor and major procedures in the generalized surgical specialties (e.g., GYN, General and Plastics).
• Experience in scrubbing at least minor procedures in specialty surgical areas (e.g., ortho, neuro, ENT, Uro. etc.).
• Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and organize sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures.
• Establish and maintain a sterile field throughout assigned cases.
• Pass instruments, supplies, and equipment to surgeons during procedures.
• Perform surgical counts according to patient safety protocols.
• Inspect instruments and equipment to ensure cleanliness, functionality, and sterility.
• Assist with operating room setup and turnover between cases.
• Adhere to infection control, safety, and regulatory standards.
• Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and other perioperative staff.
• Support emergency and urgent surgical procedures as needed.
• Maintain accurate documentation related to surgical supplies and instruments.
