Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Provide students with a personalized and rigorous online learning experience via a Learning Management System that fulfills their potential for academic and social growth. The online instructor will deliver state‑aligned curriculum through a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction, conducted from a set, professional workspace designed to minimize distractions and maximize instructional quality. The instructor is responsible for guiding students toward TEKS mastery while maintaining constant communication with families and utilizing data to drive student engagement and achievement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject/level assigned

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of assigned curriculum; knowledge of instructional methods
  • Lesson planning and presentation skills
  • Ability to resolve technical issues that may arise
  • Online classroom management skills
  • Group interaction skills
  • Demonstrate initiative and be self‑motivated
  • Maintain flexibility with students in the online setting
  • Use Canvas to teach online
  • Possess technology skills in using word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint, e‑mail, internet browser, video capture, and other software as it pertains to the online classroom

Work Conditions

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; equipment required to demonstrate and perform tasks related to assigned subject area of online instruction
  • Posture: Frequent standing and walking; bending/stooping and reaching fully above head, pushing, pulling, and twisting
  • Motion: Frequent typing, keyboarding
  • Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting over 50 lbs.; may lift and move AV equipment, classroom equipment
  • Environment: Constant exposure to computer screen; occasional districtwide and statewide travel
  • Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to respond to needs in a timely manner in a high stress environment; work prolonged or irregular hours—must be able to dedicate after school hours, including weekends, to the online class
  • Regular Attendance is an essential function
  • Minimum Experience: University/college required student teaching or approved internship
  • Experience in online learning and/or instruction preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Management
  • Develop and implement lesson plans for virtual learning that fulfill the requirements of district’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodation for individual student differences.
  • Implement and maintain the integrity of the online course as written.
  • Assess student learning styles and interests and adjust the course to accommodate individual student needs.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and emerging digital trends, to make content engaging and accessible and present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to remain available during non‑school hours, including evenings and weekends, to respond to student inquiries and facilitate live sessions.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning where students understand and utilize the rules of netiquette.
  • Establish and maintain a set, professional workspace designated for virtual instruction. This space must be free from distractions and background noise to ensure a high‑quality audio/visual experience for students.
  • Ensure the visible background during synchronous sessions is professional, neutral, and consistent with an educational environment.
  • Maintain all reports, records, and other required documents.
Student Growth and Development
  • Assist students in analyzing and improving methods and habits of study.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formative and summative assessments and track progress through a variety of methods.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Present for students a positive role model that supports the mission of AISD.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Establish effective virtual classroom management and administer discipline in accordance with board policies, administrative regulations, and program management plans.
Communication
  • Stay in consistent contact with students throughout the course to ensure proper engagement.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Participate in the district staff development program to improve job related skills.

  • Perform such other tasks and accepts such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
  • Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers including the Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Attend and participate in Amarillo ISD Online faculty meetings.
