CNSG 770E - Advanced Psychopathology & Psychopharmacology
This advanced graduate course integrates psychopathology, DSM-5-TR diagnosis, clinical assessment, treatment planning, psychopharmacology, neurobiology, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students develop competency in recognizing mental disorders, conducting differential diagnosis, selecting appropriate assessment strategies, understanding psychotropic medications, collaborating with prescribers, and integrating biological, psychological, developmental, relational, multicultural, and contemplative perspectives into treatment planning.
Particular emphasis is placed on ethical scope of practice, medication referral, integrated care, trauma-informed assessment, and whole-person conceptualization. Additionally, focused attention is given to contextual dimensions of clinical mental health counseling, examining the roles, interdisciplinary relationships, legal/fiscal systems, community needs assessment, levels of care and community intervention, and core administrative and practice-management principles across public, private, and independent practice settings.
The instructor should have:
Understanding of counselor scope of practice, including appropriate medication referral, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical practice.
