Job summary

ISP School Battle is seeking a One-to-One Teaching Assistant to mentor a pupil and assist in lessons at our Battle, East Sussex campus. The role involves supporting a pupil or small group, reporting progress, and helping with classroom activities as part of a fixed-term, term-time contract.

The successful candidate will have a strong education foundation (GCSEs in English and Maths) and experience with SEMH learners, with a commitment to safeguarding and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Strong basic education, GCSEs in English Language and Mathematics.
  • Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant or similar role.
  • Experience working with SEMH pupils in education settings.
  • Ability to lead on a specialism (e.g., reading, math, forest school).
  • Sound behaviour management skills and willingness to develop professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and support one pupil, or a small group of up to five pupils.
  • Support the classroom teacher during lessons.
  • Report on pupils’ progress and liaise with staff to meet needs.
  • Supervise pupils during non-classroom time and school trips.
  • Assist with lesson planning, preparation, and marking.

One-to-One Teaching Assistant – Progress & Engagement Guide
Basic Salary: £24,890 FTE (£14,934 actual)
Hours: 22.5 hours per week, 3 days per week, including accompanying a pupil to Plumpton College one day per week
Contract: Fixed Term Contract, Term Time Only
Location: Battle, Sussex
Start Date: ASAP

Role Responsibilities
  • Dedicated to mentoring and supporting one pupil, or a small group of no more than five pupils
  • Supporting the classroom teacher during lessons
  • Reporting on pupils’ progress and concerns, and liaising with other school staff to ensure pupils’ needs are met
  • Supervision of pupils during non-classroom time, including extra-curricular activities and school trips
  • Assisting with lesson planning and classroom preparation
  • Setting work where appropriate, and marking
  • Building positive relationships with pupils and driving interaction and positive learning outcomes
Requirements
  • Have a strong basic education, ideally to A-level, with a minimum of GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English Language and Mathematics, and sound IT skills
  • Previous experience in a similar role, for example as a Teaching Assistant
  • Some previous experience of working with pupils with SEMH within an educational setting
  • Be experienced and confident enough to be able to lead on a specialism, for example reading, mathematics or forest school
  • Experience of behaviour management and techniques
  • Committed to professional development and willing to learn

The successful candidate will be required to complete an enhanced DBS check, the cost of which will be met by ISP School Battle.
