Job summary

NC State University’s Veterinary Hospital is seeking a veterinary technician to join the Medical Oncology service within the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center.

The role requires in-depth veterinary knowledge, a strong interest in a teaching hospital environment, and ability to coordinate patient care within a fast-changing setting. Responsibilities include client communication, patient care, diagnostic support, and collaboration with clinicians.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited training program in veterinary medicine, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licensure.

Responsibilities

• Direct patient care duties including client check in, patient admitting, updates, scheduling, and questions.
• Perform diagnostic testing and procedures including anesthesia support, biopsies, physical evaluations, and microscope evaluations.
• Prepare patients for surgical procedures and maintain a sterile surgical environment; assist during procedures.
• Provide medical treatments including sedation, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, chemotherapy, and pain management.

The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. This position provides care and coordination for patients with the Medical Oncology department of the Randall B. Terry Jr. Companion Animal Medical Center. The Medical Oncology service offers leading edge care for patients in need of diagnosis and treatment related to various types of cancer.

A person in this department must possess in-depth knowledge of veterinary medicine and a strong desire to work in a fast-changing, teaching environment with a varied population of people.

Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to:

• Participates in client check in, patient admitting, updates, scheduling, and questions.
• In depth knowledge of service specific patients through student and clinician communications regarding presenting problems, diagnostics, treatment options and overall projected plan of care.
• Performs and supports various diagnostic testing and procedures including; anesthesia support and monitoring, mass and bone marrow biopsies, physical evaluations, microscope evaluations
• Prepare patients for surgical procedures through standard aseptic clip, prep, scrub and draping techniques
• Maintain a sterile surgical environment and provide assistance during routine and surgical procedures
• Provide direct patient care and medical treatments including TPR , BP monitoring, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, sedative/treatment therapy injections, bandaging, chemotherapy, microscope slide preparation
• Perform moderate risk drug calculations, including CRI , IV fluid, medical pain management and chemotherapy treatment therapies
• Provide post-anesthesia and post-sedation recovery and care, including pain management, for an array of elective procedures
• Direct monitoring of canine and feline cancer patients, associated with, but not limited to the following diseases; Lymphoma, Mammary Tumors, Oral Melanoma, Hemangiosarcoma, Mast Cell Tumor, Osteosarcoma
• Proficient use of specialized patient care equipment such as IV fluid pumps, pulse Oximeter, BP monitor, syringe pump
• Position works in tandem with diagnostic groups associated with CT, MRI , ultrasound, and radiography

The position provides essential patient, departmental and hospital coordination of workflow, information and teaching with duties to include, but are not limited to:

• Position works directly with clients, rDVM, and hospital personnel to facilitate communication and anticipate, integrate and coordinate services that optimize both internal and external satisfaction and overall patient care.
• Records and communicates a variety of data relating to patient care, client/rDVM communication and diagnostic testing/treatments with use of hospital information systems.
• Orientation, teaching, and coaching new staff, students, interns and residents in related policies, procedures, and patient care
• Maintaining a clean and working environment following hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with OSHA , EHS and radiation safety policies and trainings
• Participates in financial responsibilities such as procedural/consult charges, billing communications, estimate updates
• Responsible for coordination of patient visit including but not limited to; requesting radiographic/surgical/anesthetic procedures, medication requests and diagnostic sample submission
• Keeps all necessary equipment in clean and working order and has all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient care

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.

Required License or Certification

• Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program
