Job summary

Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York is seeking an Oncology Research Nurse I to manage direct patient care for individuals enrolled in cancer clinical trials. This RN role reports to the Oncology Research Nurse Manager and offers a flexible 4- or 5-day work week depending on department needs.

Responsibilities include informed consent, study visits, protocol assessments, real-time drug accountability, patient education, and diligent nursing documentation within CPDM standards;

• BSN or Accelerated Nursing Program, NYS RN license
• Four years of related experience or equivalent
• Oncology clinical research experience preferred

Position Summary

The Oncology Research Nurse I is a Registered Nurse who manages the direct care of patients enrolled in clinical trials within the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. This position reports directly to the Oncology Research Nurse Manager. Subject to business needs, a flexible work arrangement, 4- or 5-day work week, is available. Options will be discussed during the interview process.

Responsibilities

• DIRECT PATIENT CARE
  • Conduct informed consent discussions / obtain informed consent.
  • Attend and/or perform research visits.
  • Perform/review required protocol assessments.
  • Perform physical assessments within the scope of nursing practice.
  • Ascertain real‑time drug accountability.
  • Monitor patient responses intra- and post‑study drug administration (as required per protocol).
  • Conduct study‑related patient education.
  • Perform phone triage for acute clinical issues and conduct phone assessments as required per protocol.
• DOCUMENTATION
  • Responsible for timely research nursing documentation as per CPDM’s Research Nursing Documentation SOP.
  • Facilitate study drug/product order preparation and verification.

    • Assist with pre‑certifications and prior authorizations for procedures / prescriptions.

  • Eligible to apply for Oncology Research Nurse II after two years.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing or completion of an Accelerated Program in Nursing.
• NYS RN License.
• Four years of related experience or equivalent in education.

Preferred Qualifications

• Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) training certification, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certificate, and Conflict of Interest (COI) training certification required upon hire.
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Computer Skills: proficiency with MS Word and familiarity with Mac and PC platforms.
• Clinical research experience or oncology nursing experience preferred.
