Job summary

Advocate Health seeks a Genetic Counselor to provide comprehensive counseling and testing, interpret results, and communicate findings to patients and providers. You will educate clinicians, coordinate tests, and engage in multidisciplinary efforts to advance genetics services.

The role includes mentoring team members, contributing to improvement projects, and developing education programs for staff and the public, while maintaining compliance with relevant laws and standards.

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational and presentation skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Basic computer skills including the use of computer applications.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive genetic counseling and testing to patients including interpreting clinical/laboratory findings and conveying them to patients and providers.
  • Researches information regarding a particular disorder and relays clinical/genetic information in a meaningful way.
  • Assesses psychosocial situations and offers support; educates patients regarding risks and benefits of procedures for informed consent.
  • Refers families to community resources and maintains follow up.
  • Works with laboratory providers to order and evaluate genetic tests; coordinates with non-ACL labs for reference testing.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary or specialty clinic meetings as the genetics expert.
  • Provides education to physicians and allied health professionals.
  • Participates in division-level improvement projects benefiting patient care and genetics services.
  • Develops and presents genetics education programs for counselors, physicians, and lay populations.
  • Serves as a mentor/coach for new team members including Entry level genetic counselor and Genetic Counselor I.
  • Knowledge of relevant laws and standards impacting genetic services.
