Job summary

General Dynamics NASSCO seeks an experienced shipboard mechanic to conduct system checks, supervise commissioning, and test equipment per diagrams and procedures.

The role involves assembling piping, maintaining propulsion and support systems, and performing light offs and Verifications on deck. Candidates must read drawings, manuals, and diagrams, use precision tools, and work safely in confined spaces or at heights.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent education.
• At least three years of related experience or graduates from Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training.
• Three years in Navy ratings MM, BT, AD, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR.
• Ability to read and comprehend mechanical drawings, manuals, and hydraulic/pneumatic diagrams.
• Able to assemble/install complex mechanical systems with proper alignment.
• Proficient with precision measuring tools; understands imperial and metric systems.
• Shop math skills including decimals and fractions; able to align machinery and systems.
• Able to perform initial light offs of shipboard systems and test per manuals.
• Able to troubleshoot and take corrective action; stand watch and take readings.
• Understand written and verbal instructions, hear warnings, and follow safety rules.

Responsibilities

• Operate and test all onboard systems and equipment.
• Support commissioning activities.
• Assemble and install complex piping systems.
• Support machinery plant operations including fuel, water, and air systems.
• Conduct initial shipboard system light offs and verifications.
• Troubleshoot and repair equipment not operating to specs.
• Stand watch, take readings, and correct deficiencies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
