Job summary

Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler is seeking a part-time Elmira Community Kitchen staff member to support volunteers and supervise meal operations. The role emphasizes food safety, inventory, and guest hospitality.

The position focuses on delivering meals, coordinating volunteers, and ensuring a clean, compliant kitchen and dining area in alignment with the agency mission.

Qualifications

• Associates degree in human services or equivalent experience in food service.
• Serv-Safe certification or willingness to achieve.
• Valid NY State Driver License and access to a reliable vehicle.
• Knowledge of nutrition and safe food handling practices/regulations.

Responsibilities

• Be present during meals and supervise the kitchen and dining areas.
• Maintain cleanliness and stock of kitchen, dining room, storage, and bathrooms.
• Ensure equipment is well-maintained and in good repair.
• Maintain inventory control and rotate food for safety and timely use.
• Receive and stock delivered donations and purchases; pick up as needed.
• Promote compliance with food handling regulations and agency policies; record guest counts; prepare monthly reports.
• Assist volunteer chefs with meal prep, plating and serving.
• Assist dining hosts in welcoming guests and promoting hospitality.
• Ensure entrances are accessible and areas are free of snow and debris.
• Supervise volunteer experiences and assist outreach to guests.
• Support volunteer training and participate in related meetings.

Salary: $22.00-26.00 an hour

Qualifications

Education: Associates Degree in Human Services or equivalent experience in food service. Serv-Safe Certification or willingness to achieve.

Credentials: Valid NY State Driver License and access to a reliable vehicle.

Experience: Knowledge of nutrition, safe food handling practices/regulations, basic cooking skills. Understanding of food security and sensitivity to the social conditions related to poverty/hunger. Experience working with volunteers.

General Description

Represents Catholic Charities as staff presence at the Elmira Community Kitchen to provide support/assistance to volunteers and supervision of Capabilities workers. Assists the program Director in assuring smooth and effective operations of the meal program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Be present during meals.
• Assure kitchen, dining room, storage rooms, bathrooms, building are kept clean and stocked.
• Assure equipment is well-maintained and in good repair.
• Maintain inventory control system to identify/secure needed supplies and rotation of food for timely use and safety.
• Receive and stock deliveries of donated and purchased commodities. Pick up donations/purchases when required.
• Promote compliance with all local, State, Federal safe food handling practices/regulations; and promote compliance with Catholic Charities policies and procedures. Record meal guest count. Prepare monthly statistical report.
• Assist volunteer chefs with meal preparation/plating/serving when needed.
• Assist volunteer dining room hosts in welcoming guests and promoting hospitality and harmony during meals.
• Assure entrances are accessible and clear of snow; and perimeter free of debris/trash.
• Supervise group volunteer experiences; assist community partner agency on-site outreach to guests.
• Assist ECK Director in planning and hosting volunteer training; participate in meetings of volunteer chefs and dining room hosts.
• Participate in outreach events to represent ECK and Catholic Charities.
• Help maintain/update Volunteer Contact/Commitment information file.
• Other job-related duties requested by supervisor.
