Job summary

Penn State University in State College, PA, seeks an experienced Electrical Engineering Technologist to join the EMDD at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL). The role supports R&D in electronic materials processing, testing, device fabrication and materials growth.

Responsibilities include sample prep, environmental control, data analysis, and mentoring support staff, with a focus on safety and cross-project collaboration in a DoD-affiliate environment.

Qualifications

  • Background knowledge of sample preparation and materials characterization.
  • Understanding of laboratory safety practices, PPE, chemical handling and waste disposal.
  • Ability to maintain organized and detailed notes.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly to others for understanding.
  • Previous success in collaborations in a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture.

Responsibilities

  • Sample preparation, including machining, cutting and grinding.
  • Prepare material for processing, manage inventory of materials.
  • Polish substrates/films/materials.
  • Configure furnaces/reactors and vacuum hardware.
  • Run furnaces/reactors and monitor growth/synthesis processes.
  • Collect, analyze and distribute relevant data in summaries.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and troubleshoot as necessary.
  • Input on technical approaches and processing conditions.
  • Ensure equipment is running safely and efficiently.
  • Mentor other Engineering support staff.
