Job summary

The Salvation Army Southwest Division, at the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Phoenix, Arizona, is seeking a Sports Instructor I for an on-call position to teach beginners and intermediates in assigned sports and to provide a safe, engaging learning environment for youth participants.

You must be 16+ with sports coaching experience, strong people skills, and the ability to work with children and families. CPR/First Aid is preferred; background checks and health/safety standards apply.

Qualifications

• Must be a minimum of 16 years old.
• Working knowledge of areas of sports such as volleyball, basketball, flag football, soccer, etc.
• One year of experience in sport or related coaching.
• Ability to relate well with people and provide friendly customer service.
• CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
• Must pass a criminal background check.
• Meet Health Department and Salvation Army health & safety regulations.
• Demonstrates leadership and education with children, parents, staff.

Responsibilities

• Teach beginners and intermediate learners in assigned sport.
• Communicate before both small and large groups with poise and enthusiasm.
• Provide individual development guidelines following the coaches’ handbook.
• Attend coaches meetings and trainings, including referring clinics.
• Critique and give feedback to participants on performance.
• Create, teach, implement, and demonstrate incidents to supervisors.
• Generate accurate accident reports and notify responsible personnel.
• Display integrity, enthusiasm, and sound moral judgment.
• Follow Salvation Army policies and Protecting the Mission procedures.
• Provide a safe, fun learning environment for all participants.
• Maintain open communication with supervisor regarding scheduling and coaching.
• Maintain professional demeanor with children, parents, customers, staff, and management.
• Be on time and prepared to teach your class.
• Promote equality and fairness among participants.
• Follow Team Composition Objectives in handbook.
• Communicate any changes to supervisors and participants efficiently.
• Perform other duties as assigned as related to Sports Instructor I.
