Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled technician to maintain and repair traffic signal systems across assigned districts. The role involves routine and preventive maintenance, inspections, and timely response to signal faults. Strong communication with the public and police is required.

Candidates should be able to operate hand tools, use testing equipment, and program signal timings using a laptop. CDL is preferred and related IMSA certifications are a plus.

Qualifications

• Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing.

• Ability to physically perform hands-on signals and related structures and components and use all required equipment therein.
• Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple competing assignments.
• Ability to use a variety of hand tools and testing equipment to perform maintenance on traffic signals.
• Knowledge of a variety of traffic control devices, signal equipment and their operation.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state and department rules, regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
• Knowledge of management systems to include timing plans, graphic design and computer use.
• Knowledge of traffic signal maintenance and operations.
• Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

• Communications: Communicate effectively and provide customer service when dealing with VDOT employees, contractors, responders and the general public.
• Maintenance of Traffic Signal: Maintain a large number of traffic signals through maintenance programs and inspections, using a laptop connected to central systems.
• Perform Preventative Maintenance: Conduct periodic inspections of electronic devices and related equipment.
• Signal Inspection: Communicate with the public and police regarding traffic signal operations and repairs.
• Traffic Signal Repairs: Respond to malfunctions and troubleshoot traffic control devices using meters and tools; program controllers using a laptop; monitor signals and timings.
