Job Description

Perform special duties as assigned and maintain traffic signals in accordance with safety standards, VDOT policies, procedures, and operational standards.

How You Will Contribute

• Communications: Effectively communicate and provide customer service to VDOT employees, contractors, responders, and the public.
• Maintenance of Traffic Signal: Maintain a large number of traffic signals through ordinary maintenance, replacement, and preventive maintenance programs; conduct scheduled checks of major signal components using a laptop that communicates with the central system via a cabinet modem.
• Preventative Maintenance: Perform periodic preventive maintenance and inspections of electronic devices and related equipment for assigned program areas.
• Signal Inspection: Communicate with the public about operations and problems with traffic signals; coordinate with police regarding signal work and repairs.
• Traffic Signal Repairs: Respond to complaints and malfunctions, troubleshoot electronic traffic control devices using frequency meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, soldering tools, and other hand tools; install signal controllers, program timings, troubleshoot 170‑control boxes, and use the MIST system to monitor signal systems.
• Troubleshoot and Repair Electronic Devices: Diagnose and repair electronic devices for assigned program areas.

Minimum Qualifications

• Physical ability to perform hands‑on inspections of signals, components, and equipment; work at heights, in confined spaces, near moving traffic, and in inclement weather.
• Plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple competing assignments while keeping detailed and accurate records.
• Serve in an on‑call capacity and respond to emergency situations within a specified period.
• Use a variety of hand tools and testing equipment to perform maintenance on traffic signals.
• Knowledge of a variety of traffic control devices, signal equipment, and their operation.
• Knowledge of management systems including timing plans, graphic design, and computer use.
• Knowledge of traffic signal maintenance and operations.
• Provide and promote good customer service to internal and external customers.
• Valid driver’s license.

Additional Considerations

• Training, experience, or education in the electrical field or a related field is desirable.
• Commercial driver’s license.
• IMSA Roadway Lighting certification (desired).
• IMSA Traffic Signal Level I technician certification (desired).

Physical Requirements

• Perform physically demanding tasks related to traffic signal maintenance and repairs.
