Job summary

The City of Ontario, Oregon is seeking a dedicated Utility Worker to support Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, and Street Maintenance operations. The role involves maintenance, repair, and construction tasks to help keep public infrastructure safe and reliable.

Ideal candidates have public works or utilities experience, enjoy outdoor labor, and are comfortable operating equipment; on-call and weekend shifts may occur.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Some experience in water distribution, sewer collections, street maintenance, construction, or public works.
• Ability to operate or learn to operate construction and utility equipment.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Ability to lift, carry, and perform physical labor.
• Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies when on call.

Responsibilities

• Assist with operation, repair, and maintenance of streets, water distribution, and wastewater collection systems
• Inspect and maintain water lines, sewer systems, storm drains, lift stations, and catch basins
• Install, repair, and read water meters
• Perform water shut-offs and turn-ons
• Install and repair water lines, valves, pumps, standpipes, manholes, and cleanouts
• Perform street maintenance including paving, patching, concrete repair, and sign maintenance
• Assist with snow removal and sanding operations
• Operate and maintain light and heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, sewer cleaners, and welders
• Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance of equipment and tools
• Respond to customer service requests and public concerns
• Use utility locator services prior to excavation
• Report hazards such as potholes, water leaks, or fallen signs
• Maintain accurate records and reports of work performed
• Follow all safety procedures and department policies
