The Burlington School District is seeking bilingual individuals in one or more of the following languages: Kirundi, Swahili, Spanish Nepali, Somali, or Maay Maay to serve as an on-call interpreter and or translator. This position supports Multilingual students and their families as well as school personnel to assist students in achieving success in the U.S. education system by providing interpretation or translation, as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide accurate, impartial, and confidential interpretation between students, families, and school staff in a variety of settings, including classrooms, meetings, and school events.
  • Facilitate effective communication to support student learning, family engagement, and equitable access to school programs and services.
  • Interpret in situations that may involve sensitive or confidential information, maintaining professionalism at all times.
  • Accurately convey meaning, tone, and intent without adding, omitting, or altering messages.
  • Assist in bridging cultural understanding between families and school personnel.
  • Respond to on-call assignments with flexibility and professionalism, often on short notice.
  • Maintain current knowledge of educational terminology and school district policies relevant to interpretation.
  • Comply with professional standards and the district’s code of ethics regarding interpreting and confidentiality.
  • Work collaboratively with educators, administrators, and support staff to ensure effective communication in diverse settings.
  • Perform other interpretation-related duties as assigned to support student and family needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be fluent and literate in native language as well as English language to provide translation and interpreting services.
  • Must be familiar with the US education system as well as education in the native culture.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, and the school community, using strong cross cultural and interpersonal skills. Professional, courteous behavior expected.
  • Basic knowledge of computers is preferred, but not required.
  • Experience as a professional interpreter would be an asset, but is not required.
