Job summary

Sylvania is seeking an On-Call Substitute Custodian to cover day and evening shifts Monday through Friday. The role requires performing custodial tasks, supporting safety policies, and assisting with a variety of maintenance duties as assigned by school leadership.

The ideal candidate can follow oral and written directions, work well with staff and students, and undergo a background check in accordance with Illinois requirements.

Qualifications

• Must possess good moral character.
• Must undergo criminal background investigation per Illinois statutory requirements.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions and get along with others.

Responsibilities

• Comply with safety policies when handling maintenance supplies, cleaning materials and equipment.
• Perform non-school day tasks.
• Complete any maintenance or custodial related assignments.
• Use proper cleaning methods and disposal of designated equipment and supplies.
• Respond to requests from administration (setup meetings, move furniture, deliveries).
• Respond promptly to assignments.
• Report all accidents or potential hazards to administration or custodial supervisor.
• Perform tasks to maintain the building site including painting, plumbing and related activities.
• Refinish or restore floor tile as required by cleaning procedures.
• Maintain carpet by machine extraction, shampooing and spotting.
• Open and/or secure the building to protect against vandalism and theft.
• Maintain building perimeter by inspecting walkways, landscaping and playground equipment.
• Maintain and/or operate snow removal equipment and other maintenance equipment.
• Tend to furnace, boiler, AC and other equipment to provide climate control.
• Attend in-service training to improve knowledge and skills.
• Promote safe work practices at all times.
• Use safety equipment as appropriate.
• Take precautions to protect students, staff, visitors, equipment and facilities.
• Comply with district regulations and policies.
• Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
• Learn routine and non-routine maintenance methods and equipment usage; follow directions; get along with others.
