Job summary

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is recruiting Vessel Strike Avoidance Protected Species Observers (VSA) to deploy on a squid trawl survey vessel off the coast of New York. Applicants must hold NMFS PSO approval letters and be prepared for 24/7 offshore duty in shifts.

Minimum qualifications include BST/GWO/BOSIET, CPR/First Aid, a 4-year degree in biological or geophysical sciences, and fitness for sea duty. The position offers an hourly rate with AIS benefits after 30 days of employment, and is based in

Qualifications

• Must have BST, GWO or BOSIET training.
• Must have CPR/First Aid certification.
• 4-year degree in biological or geophysical sciences.
• Physician-certified fit for sea duty with: no chronic motion sickness, ability to live in confined quarters, ability to tolerate stress, lift up to 30 pounds, monitor waters up to 4 hours at a time and up to 12 hours in 24 hours.
• Must have completed an approved PSO course/training and provide certificate.
• Must be NMFS approved PSO with NMFS approval letter.
• Must possess a current real ID for identification.
• Must not be affiliated with any group that may impair objectivity.
• Must have proof of eligibility to work within the US.

Responsibilities

• Vigilantly monitor for marine mammal detections for up to 12 hours in a 24-hour period.
• Advise vessel crew on project regulatory requirements and real-time mitigation actions.
• Identify marine animals using naked eye and visual technology.
• Document behavior and other essential data.
• Collect and enter data into required data sheets in an organized manner.
• Perform QA/QC checks on data collected.
• Attend daily toolbox, HSE and project meetings as needed.
• Operate and maintain field equipment (GPS, binoculars, range finder, night vision, camera).
