NYS Department of Transportation in New York is seeking an Office Assistant 1 to perform entry-level clerical and office support tasks across agency programs.
Duties include maintaining records, processing transactions, answering phones, preparing forms, and assisting customers. The NY HELPS program may place staff in non-competitive appointments with eventual potential to move to permanent competitive status.
As an Office Assistant 1, you would perform entry-level clerical and office support work, including processing transactions and maintaining records, in variety of organizational setting, to meet the requirements of agency programs. Examples of your duties may include: keeping records; retrieving and compiling information; performing basic arithmetic calculations; mail, supply, and inventory functions; some keyboarding and other document preparation task; answering telephones; completing forms; answering questions or other wise assisting customers; or creating or assisting in the preparation of reports, charts, graphs, and tables.

Candidates may also be qualified for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
