Job summary

Sumter School District is seeking a seasoned athletics coach to lead and support middle school programs. This role emphasizes coaching leadership, health and safety oversight, and alignment with district athletic policies.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years coaching experience.
• Must possess or demonstrate the qualifications to obtain South Carolina educator certification.
• Such alternatives to these qualifications as the Board may find acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and assists the Athletic Director in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members.
• Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
• Responsible for the health and safety of student athletes. Ensures proper safety and first aid procedures are followed at all times. Ensures participants have a valid physical examination before participation.
• Promotes and maintains positive relationships with parents and student athletes; conducts parent meetings prior to the season.
• Ensures program compliance with school, District, SC High School League, and related rules; communicates policies to team members.
• Ensures appropriate behavior of coaching staff, players, and team personnel at all times.
• Sponsors fundraisers, youth camps, and team-related activities to promote the sports program.

Location: Furman Middle School

Reports To: Principal and Athletic Director

Rate of Pay: Based upon credentials and experience in accordance with the district-approved pay scale.

Performance Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and assists the Athletic Director in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members.
• Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
• Responsible for the health and safety of student athletes. Ensures that proper safety and first aid procedures are followed at all times. Follows all appropriate emergency procedures. Makes sure that all participants have a valid physical examination before participation.
• Promotes and maintains positive relationships with parents and student athletes. Conducts parent meetings prior to the beginning of the season.
• Ensures that the sports program complies with the rules and regulations of the school and District, the South Carolina High School League, affiliated Conference and Region. Complies with all other legal requirements of school athletic programs. Communicates to members of his/her team all policies, rules, procedures, and requirements as they pertain to the team.
• Ensures appropriate behavior of assigned coaching staff, players, and other team personnel at all times.
• Ensures punctual attendance at scheduled coaches' meetings and rules clinics. Promotes the sports program by sponsoring fundraisers, sponsoring youth camps, attending team camps, etc.

Terms: Salary and work year to be recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
