Job description

Overview

An ocean modeling Scientist position with 12 month base salary support is open in the Climate and Global Dynamics (CGD) Laboratory of NCAR in Boulder, Colorado. This position includes software engineering and project scientist support, and a share of CGD administrative and computing resources.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct original, independent and collaborative research in ocean model development with a focus on computational methods and interfacing resolved-scale dynamics (ocean dynamical cores) with physical parameterizations across a range of resolutions.
  • Lead and facilitate collaborative research on the incorporation of new ocean dynamical cores within the Community Earth System Model (CESM) framework.
  • Communicate scientific results through publications in scientific journals and presentations at national and international scientific meetings.
  • Coordinate activities with ocean modeling partners, the CESM Ocean Modeling Working Group (OMWG) and university contributors.
  • Collaborate with newly hired Project Scientists and Software Engineers, and with existing members of the Oceanography Section of CGD to advance partnerships.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in physical oceanography or related science or engineering.
  • Experience in ocean modeling and interpretation of models in relation to CESM and related frameworks is preferred.
Context and Mission

The successful candidate will contribute to CGD7s mission to discover key processes in the Earth7s climate system, represent knowledge in community models, and apply models and observations to scientifically relevant problems. CGD supports a triad of activities: fundamental research, community model development, and application of models to climate problems. CGD is the host center of CESM, and most activities support CESM directly or indirectly. CGD scientists may develop an independent research program within NCAR and CGD strategy.

Application Information

Information for Applicants: To apply for this position, visit UCAR Human Resources (no external URL included). A Ph.D. or equivalent experience in physical oceanography or related science or engineering is required. Applicants should supply a cover letter, a statement of research interests and their potential contribution to CGD, a current CV, and the names of four potential references. Consideration of applications will begin on a specified date.

Equal Opportunity

CGD is a laboratory of NCAR, a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) of the National Science Foundation. NCAR is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. Further information about NCAR, CGD, the CGD Strategic Plan, and CESM is available from NCAR/CGD communications channels.
