Overview

The Occupational Therapy Assistant seeks and follows supervision from an occupational therapist in delivery of occupational therapy services and collaborates with the occupational therapist in assessing the efficiency and effectiveness of occupational therapy services and assists in designing and implementing processes to support quality delivery of service.

Responsibilities

Educates current and potential referral sources about the scope of services and process of initiating services.

Assists occupational therapist in screening of patients as a member of rehabilitation team in accordance with state laws and regulations.

Assists occupational therapist in communicating screening results and recommendations to the appropriate person, group, or organization.

Assists occupational therapist in evaluation of performance areas, performance components and performance contexts as per uniform terminology defined by Standards of Practice for Occupational Therapy.

Educates clients and others about the purposes and procedures of the evaluation.

Follows defined protocols when standardized assessments are used.

Assists occupational therapist in analyzing, interpreting, and summarizing assessment data to determine the client's current functional status and to develop an appropriate intervention plan.

Assists occupational therapist in completing and documenting occupational therapy evaluation results within the timeframes, formats, and standards established by practice settings, government agencies, external accreditation programs, and payers.

Assists occupational therapist in communicating results, within the boundaries of client confidentiality, to the appropriate person, group, or organization.

Assists occupational therapist in developing and documenting the intervention plan that is based upon the occupational therapy evaluation and the desires and expectations of the client and appropriate others about the outcome of the service.

Assists occupational therapist by contributing to process in

defining intervention plan client-centered goals

that are clear, measurable, behavioral, functional, contextually relevant, and appropriate to the client's needs, desires, and expected outcomes.

Contributes to the process in assisting occupational therapist in reviewing the intervention plan with the client and appropriate others.

Under occupational therapy supervision, implements the intervention plan through the use of specified purposeful activities or therapeutic methods that are meaningful to the client and are effective methods for enhancing occupational performance.

Informs clients and appropriate others regarding the relative benefits and risks of the intervention.

Maintains or seeks current information on resources relevant to the clients' needs.

Assists occupational therapist during the reevaluation process and documents changes in the client's goals, performance and needs.

Assists in identifying modification of the intervention process to reflect changes in client status, desires, and response to intervention.

Documents the occupational therapy services provided within the time frames, formats, and standards established by the practice settings, agencies, external accreditation agencies, and payers.

Assists in preparing a formal transition plan that is based upon identified needs.

Facilitates the transition process in cooperation with the client, family members, significant others, rehab team, transitionary healthcare team, and community resources and individuals when appropriate.

Provides recommendation to occupational therapist to discontinue services when the client has achieved predetermined goals, has achieved maximum benefit from occupational therapy services, or does not desire to continue services.

Assists in preparing and implementing a discontinuation plan that addresses appropriate follow-up resources.

Assists occupational therapist in documenting changes in the client's status between the initial evaluation and discontinuation of services.

Maintains necessary and accurate records and statistical

reports as required.

Assists in providing inservice education programs to hospital personnel.

Attends required inservices and meetings.

Adheres to established policies and procedures defined for the Rehabilitation Department.

Assists in cleaning and maintenance of therapy equipment and department.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Graduated from an ACOTE-accredited associate degree or certification program in occupational therapy, successfully completed a minimum of 3 months of supervised fieldwork experience, passed the occupational therapy assistant national entry-level certification examination administered by NBCOT, and possess a current license/certification in the state working.

Position Physical Requirements

Must possess physical ability to endure prolonged sitting; moderate walking; lifting and carrying. May require exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently; and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work.

Specific Accountabilities

Responsible for providing occupational therapy services under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist and in accordance with state laws and regulations relating to licensure/certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.
