Job summary

AccessPoint RI is seeking a compassionate part-time Occupational Therapist to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our residential programs. You will assess ADLs, sensory needs, and environmental access, then provide practical OT recommendations and staff coaching.

You’ll develop group programming focused on daily living skills, sensory regulation, and meaningful engagement, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to promote independence and well-being.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy program.
• Current Rhode Island Occupational Therapist license in good standing.
• Experience with adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities and sensory needs is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assess functional abilities related to ADL, fine motor skills, positioning, sensory processing, and environmental access.
• Develop practical OT recommendations, ADL supports, sensory strategies, and staff protocols.
• Provide staff training on ADL support, sensory needs, emotional regulation, and adaptive equipment.
• Run therapeutic groups focused on sensory regulation, coping strategies, and functional activities.
• Consult with nursing and residential staff to ensure consistent implementation of recommendations.
• Observe residents and recommend environmental modifications to support safety and participation.

We are seeking a compassionate and collaborative part-time Occupational Therapist to provide consultation and therapeutic support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities living within our residential programs.As an Occupational Therapist, you will work alongside individuals, residential staff, nursing, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to promote functional independence, emotional and sensory regulation, and meaningful participation in everyday activities. Your expertise will help identify practical strategies that allow individuals to participate more fully in their homes, routines, and communities.This is a consultative, hands-on role focused on developing realistic therapeutic recommendations that can be successfully incorporated into an individual's daily life. You will assess activities of daily living, sensory and environmental needs, recommend adaptive strategies and equipment, provide staff education, and develop therapeutic approaches that Direct Support Professionals and residential teams can confidently carry over between visits.You will also have the opportunity to develop and facilitate therapeutic group programming focused on areas such as daily living skills, sensory regulation, coping strategies, functional independence, and meaningful engagement.Whether you're helping an individual become more independent with a daily routine, identifying sensory strategies that support emotional regulation, recommending an adaptive tool, or teaching staff how to reinforce therapeutic goals throughout the day, your expertise will have a direct impact on the individuals we support.If you are an Occupational Therapist who values creativity, collaboration, practical problem-solving, and helping individuals achieve greater independence in their everyday lives, we invite you to bring your expertise to a team where your recommendations make a meaningful difference every day.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Assess functional abilities and needs related to activities of daily living, fine motor skills, positioning, sensory processing, environmental access, adaptive equipment, and participation in daily routines.Develop practical occupational therapy recommendations, ADL supports, sensory strategies, environmental supports, adaptive equipment recommendations, and resident-specific protocols for staff implementation.Provide staff training and coaching on ADL support, sensory needs, emotional regulation strategies, positioning, adaptive equipment, and resident-specific occupational therapy recommendations.Develop and periodically review agency-wide clinical guidelines related to sensory supports, functional independence, adaptive equipment, and therapeutic environments.Run or assist with therapeutic groups focused on sensory regulation, relaxation, coping, fine motor skills, functional activities, self-care, and meaningful participation.Consult with nursing, residential staff, other clinicians, families/guardians, and outside rehabilitation providers to support consistent implementation of recommendations.Observe residents in their residential settings and recommend practical environmental modifications that support safety, independence, regulation, and participation.Identify adaptive equipment or assistive device needs and provide recommendations for acquisition, use, monitoring, repair, or replacement.Document assessments, recommendations, training, protocols, and follow-up in accordance with agency requirements.Refer residents for formal evaluation or ongoing skilled therapy when needs exceed the consultant role and collaborate with outside rehabilitation providers as appropriate.Participate in clinical meetings or Human Rights Committee review when therapist expertise is needed.As requested, accompany residents and staff during community-based therapeutic or recreational activities, such as exercise, swimming, or other activities, to assess functional participation, provide professional guidance, and support safe engagement and independence.Perform other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy program.Current Rhode Island Occupational Therapist license in good standing.Experience with adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities, sensory needs, behavioral/emotional regulation, neurological conditions, aging, or residential services preferred.Ability to train non-clinical staff and translate therapy recommendations into clear, practical supports.Valid driver's license and ability to travel to AccessPoint RI program locations.
