Job summary

Parham Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, VA is seeking a PRN Occupational Therapist to support inpatient rehabilitation services. You will evaluate patients, develop individualized therapy plans, and provide hands-on interventions under the guidance of physicians and the interdisciplinary care team.

Qualifications

  • BCLS certification required within 30 days of employment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy or related field.
  • OTR or OT credential required for practice.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patients’ functional abilities and needs; develop individualized therapy plans with physicians and care team.
  • Deliver evidence-based, hands-on interventions to promote healing and independence.
  • Monitor progress and adjust treatment plans; document clearly and timely.
  • Educate patients and families to support understanding and engagement in recovery.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to ensure safe transitions of care and high-quality experiences.

Working closely with physicians and an interdisciplinary care team, you will evaluate needs, develop individualized care plans, and provide hands‑on treatment that supports recovery through every stage of healing. Your role will include:
  • Evaluating each patient’s functional abilities and needs, then developing individualized therapy plans in coordination with physicians and the care team.
  • Delivering skilled, evidence‑based interventions that promote healing, independence, and quality of life through purposeful, compassionate care.
  • Monitoring patient progress, adjusting plans as needed, and ensuring thorough, timely documentation that reflects quality outcomes.
  • Educating patients and families to build understanding, confidence, and engagement throughout recovery and beyond.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary partners to ensure seamless transitions of care, safe environments, and exceptional patient experiences.
  • Leading by example—providing guidance to therapy assistants or students and upholding HCA Healthcare’s mission, values, and commitment to excellence.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Creates an environment and culture that enables Rehabilitation Services to fulfill the mission of the Hospital to meet or exceed its goals. In collaboration with the Medical Director and other clinical staff, assures the development of quality inpatient rehabilitation programming to meet market needs.
  • Collaborates effectively with all members of the rehabilitation team within the inpatient rehabilitation unit.
  • Works with the Therapy Services Manager to ensure the supply of appropriate resources to support the programs, services, organizational structure and staffing levels necessary for quality rehabilitation services.
  • Coordinates as necessary with inpatient rehabilitation counterparts. Implements operations and processes to support, facilitate, and maintain uniform performance of inpatient care including documentation.
  • Provides a safe, secure, and infection/hazard‑free environment.
  • Supports the Therapy Services Manager in development, implementation, and monitoring of the quality management plan for inpatient rehabilitation services.
  • The Occupational Therapist supports interdepartmental performance‑improvement/customer satisfaction activities.
  • Demonstrates high ethical standards in customer service through all interactions with the patients, families, coworkers, staff, other hospital departments, physicians, community and all others.
  • Creates a high quality, professional clinical environment to facilitate the necessary recruitment of appropriate numbers of qualified staff.
Department Specific Criteria:
  • Performs positive specific job function at an acceptable level.
  • Ensures patient dignity and respects patient values.
  • Operates within ethical standards.
  • Able to assess and reassess the needs of the patient.
  • Proper documentation of assessments.
  • Able to communicate needs of patients.
  • Provides on and off‑site clinical assessments for potential patients for the facility.
  • Develops hand off communication system when he/she is unavailable.
  • Participates as an active member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Communicates pertinent payor needs/requirements to physician, treatment team, patient and patient’s family in a timely manner.
  • Provides ongoing education to patient and family as needed.
  • Participates in the admission process to the Rehabilitation Unit and communicates pertinent information to all involved parties.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, families, co‑workers, physicians, payor representatives, hospital administration, community members, and referral sources.
  • Communicating results and trends to supervisor.
  • Provides feedback to supervisor on ongoing basis in regard to concerns, improvements, changes, etc. Identifies areas needing improvement and utilizes the facility performance process.
  • Actively participates in comprehensive program evaluation system.
  • Proposes new policies and procedures that will make the admission process smooth, more comfortable and more effective for patients.
  • Serves as an educational resource to patients, families, interdisciplinary team members, payor representatives, physicians, discharge planners, therapists, community members, and other parties as appropriate regarding rehabilitation issues.
  • Works with supervisor to ensure the program meets all local, state, The Joint Commission, regulatory standards.
  • Represents program in appropriate hospital committees.
What qualifications you will need:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • Bachelors Degree
  • (OTR) Occupational Therapist Registered, or (OT) Occupational Therapist
