Job summary

Summa Health in Akron, OH is seeking an Occupational Therapy Assistant to assist in delivering therapeutic treatment to patients across acute care units. You will work under the direction of licensed OTs, rotate through treatment areas, and participate in professional practice standards and safety guidelines.

The position requires OTA certification, state licensure, CPR, and a commitment to patient-centered care.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an OTA program accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
  • Current licensure issued by the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Athletic Trainers Board.
  • Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Certification as an Occupational Therapist Assistant; active participation in professional healthcare organizations preferred.
  • Able to meet the physical demands of a fast-paced clinical environment and rotate across locations as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in administering therapeutic treatment to assigned patient population under guidance of Occupational Therapists.
  • Perform treatment within parameters established by and under supervision, in accordance with Ohio laws, AOTA guidelines, and Summa Health System requirements.

Hours based on weekly demand, forecasting & real time needs. Consistent start times; weekend & holiday rotation when applicable; float between locations with limited notice. Travel possible: Regional assignments across designated hospitals & Juve Center. IP acute care units including ICU, ED, PACU, TJR. Summary

Assists in administering therapeutic treatment to assigned patient population. Performs treatment within parameters established by and under guidance and direction of Occupational Therapists in accordance with the laws of the State of Ohio professional guidelines, the American Occupational Therapy Association, and Summa Health System/Department of Rehabilitation services requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Formal Education Required:
    • Graduate from an Occupational Therapy Assistant Program accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Association
  • Experience & Training Required:
    • Current licensure issued by the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Athletic Trainers Board
    • Current Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider (CPR) certification through the American Heart Association.
    • Certification as an Occupational Therapist Assistant
    • Active participation in professional healthcare organization preferred.
  • Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
    • Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect, dignity, cultural compassion, diversity and inclusion.
    • Demonstrated clinical proficiency through successful completion of annual competencies
    • Professional verbal and written communication skills required for communication to referral sources, customer relations, interdisciplinary care and with other stakeholders
    • Willing to advocate for and work with persons with all disabilities/conditions
    • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the work environment (See #4)
    • Must be able to work in a high paced, dynamic environment with appropriate actions taken to facilitate patient care demands and experience expectations
    • Shows flexibility/adaptability in meeting environmental constraints and regulatory demands placed on services/service delivery. Rotates through selected treatment areas and/or facilities when necessary to facilitate organizational service delivery and patient care needs.
    • Assumes accountability for demonstrating Service Excellence Care and follows standard of behavior, six commitments, code of conduct, department policies and procedures and department work expectations
    • Minimally provides 40 hours clinical care annually (PRN ONLY)
  • Level of Physical Demands:
    • Very Heavy: Exerts in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force continuously to move objects.
    • Ability to continuously stand and walk; frequently squat, climb stairs, bend to the floor, reach over the shoulder, kneels, twist, sit, stand and remain in uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time.
    • Requires standing and walking for long periods of time.
    • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye‑hand coordination.
    • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
    • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate specialized equipment and assist with fabrication of splints, pads etc. as directed.
    • Ability to lift and transport patients and equipment as position requires.
    • Requires exposure to communicable disease, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other potentially hazardous conditions common to a clinical environment.

The salary range on this job posting/advertising is base salary exclusive of any bonuses or differentials. Many factors, such as years of relevant experience and geographical location, are considered when determining the starting rate of pay.
