Overview

The Occupational Therapist is accountable for the developing, implementing, and maintaining a program to facilitate rehabilitation of mentally, physically, or emotionally handicapped individuals.

Responsibilities
  • Plans rehabilitation programs involving manual arts, prevocational activities, vocational activities, homemaking skills, daily living skills, sensorimotor activities, educational activities, and recreational activities to assist patients in functioning or adjusting to handicaps.
  • Selects activity programs consistent with the needs and capabilities of each patient and coordinates programs with other therapeutic activities.
  • Selects constructive activities to help patients achieve maximum independence, prepare for return to work, assist in restoration of function, and aid in adjustment to disability.
  • Teaches patients the skills and techniques required for participation in activities and evaluates patient progress.
  • Suggests special equipment for patient use in adapting to work and living environments.
  • Lays out materials for patient use and cleans and repairs tools at the end of each session.
  • Conducts and participates in training programs.
  • May make and fit adaptive devices such as splints, braces, and other assistive equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited college and licensed as an Occupational Therapist; OR
  • Certified as an Occupational Therapist as required by the state.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Licensed as an Occupational Therapist as required by the state; OR
  • Certified as an Occupational Therapist as required by the state.
Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Knowledge of occupational therapy principles, practices, and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Ability to evaluate patient needs and develop appropriate treatment plans.
  • Ability to instruct patients in therapeutic activities and adaptive techniques.
  • Knowledge of adaptive equipment, splints, braces, and assistive devices.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to document patient progress accurately and maintain treatment records.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to motivate patients and promote maximum independence and functional recovery.
