Job summary

State of Tennessee in Chattanooga, TN, is seeking an entry-level Occupational Safety Specialist within the Labor and Workforce Development department. Under supervision, you will learn to perform routine safety inspections and assist with regulatory compliance for public and private sector facilities.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in safety, industrial engineering, sciences or other related field.
  • OR an associate degree in safety, industrial engineering, sciences or other related field and at least two or more years of occupational safety and health experience.
  • OR an Associate/two year degree in safety, industrial engineering, sciences or other related field, one year of occupational safety, health experience, and completion of TOSHA's 12 month internal apprenticeship program.
  • Must possess a valid vehicle operator's license.

Responsibilities

  • Learns to handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts while supporting regulatory compliance.
  • Develops ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals through written correspondence, phone conversations, and in-person interactions.
  • Learns to conduct workplace inspections to identify hazards and potential violations.
  • Gathers and evaluates information to assess compliance with laws and standards.
  • Reviews standards and manuals to stay current in occupational safety/health trends.
  • Promotes and markets the On-Site Consultation Program to employers to improve voluntary compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support division operations.
