Responsibilities
- Conducts thorough evaluations of hand and upper extremity conditions, assessing range of motion, strength, sensation, coordination, and functional abilities.
- Assesses the impact of injuries on daily activities and develops a personalized treatment plan.
- Develops and implements customized exercises and activities to restore function and strength.
- Provides manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilizations, and splinting.
- Educates patients on body mechanics and ergonomics to prevent further injury.
- Designs and applies custom splints and orthoses to support injured areas, adjusting as needed based on the patient’s condition.
- Educates patients and families on injury prevention, proper body mechanics, ergonomics, and adaptive strategies for daily activities. Teaches safe techniques for performing functional tasks and using assistive devices to prevent further injury.
- Collaborates with hand surgeons, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive care plans, providing input on progress and recommending further treatment.
- Regularly evaluates and adjusts treatment plans to ensure recovery, tracking and documenting patient progress while communicating any changes to the medical team.
- Treats conditions such as fractures, tendon injuries, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve damage, and repetitive stress injuries.
- Addresses congenital conditions and post-surgical rehabilitation, including custom orthotics for pre- and post-operative populations.
- Consults with patients to understand their physical conditions and symptoms.
- Assists with the use of equipment, such as wheelchairs or walkers.
- Maintains patient records, sets realistic goals, and coordinates the plan of care with the medical team.
- Schedules patients efficiently and performs other assigned duties as assigned.
- Communicating with supervisors, peers, or subordinates.
- Performing for or working directly with the public.
Physical Demands
- Frequently standing, walking, and sitting. Ability to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear. Ability to pull, lift, carry, and push greater than 50lbs repetitively. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
Qualification
- Years of Experience: 1+ years in hand therapy or related clinical settings, such as rehabilitation or orthopedics preferred
- Education: Graduate of an accredited school of Occupational Therapy
- License, Certificate Or Registration: Occupational Therapist Virginia State License
- Certification in hand therapy (e.g., Certified Hand Therapist - CHT) is preferred
