Job summary

University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for a Telescope Optoelectronics Technician at Lick Observatory, Mount Hamilton, CA. The role supervises night-time observations, operates laser systems and telescope electronics, and troubleshoots complex instrumentation to support astronomical research.

The incumbent will train staff, document issues, and ensure safe, efficient operation of the 120-inch Shane Telescope.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college or approved apprenticeship with four years of tech tasks.
  • Experience with laser, optics, electronic, electrical and mechanical equipment.
  • Experience with complex precision instrumentation.
  • Experience with optics handling.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for digital/analog circuitry and PCs.
  • Ability to read blueprints and wiring diagrams.

Responsibilities

  • Set up observation parameters based on astronomer instructions and optimize observing time.
  • Monitor CCD guide camera, auto guiding, data acquisition systems, and related equipment.
  • Install, maintain and repair complex electronics, optics, and mechanical systems.
  • Document malfunctions and repair procedures; prepare logs and instructions for instrument setups.
  • Perform instrument readiness tests and assist observers with equipment changes.
