Job summary

Ancestry is seeking a part-time Software Engineer - Observability Engineer to join our Observability team in a flexible work environment. You will lead AI-assisted migration tooling to OpenTelemetry standards across Java, Python, Node.js, and .NET, while building robust dashboards and alert migration workflows.

The role emphasizes collaboration with security, compliance, and platform engineering to deliver scalable observability solutions and operational excellence. 20 hours/week for 6 months.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong Python development experience with high-quality code.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools for software engineering.
  • Full-stack exposure with JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frameworks.
  • Multilanguage familiarity: Java, Python, Node.js, or .NET.
  • Solid fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, testing and design patterns.
  • Experience with observability concepts: logs, metrics, traces, and distributed systems.
  • Knowledge of AWS Cloud services and containerization tools.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the migration of instrumentation to OpenTelemetry standards across languages.
  • Build AI-assisted parsing, analysis engines, and migration reports with proper error handling.
  • Design LLM-driven dashboard migration tools with functional validation.
  • Develop agentic alert migration automation between observability platforms.
  • Create validation frameworks to compare metrics and traces and build rollback procedures.
  • Develop CLI tools, scripts, and self-service migration utilities with guides.
  • Participate in observability operations including log PII detection and cost optimization.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful solutions.
