Job Description
The Obstetrics and Gynecology physician provides health assessment and direct care to obstetrics and gynecology patients as part of the provider team providing services to St. Joseph Health’s (SJH) patients.
Responsibilities
Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospitalist Duties (12-hour shifts)
- Care for unassigned inpatient OB and GYN patients
- Provide triage and/or OB ED services
- Provide GYN consultations for hospitalized patients and the Emergency Department
- Oversee residents, fellows, midwives, or advanced practice nurses
- Provide call coverage and L&D support: interpretation of EFM strips, standby for deliveries, perform delivery and monitoring of laboring patients for private OBs
- Serve as MFM extenders
- Surgically assist for other OBs or gynecologists
General Obstetrics and Gynecology Attending Physician Duties
- Provide general primary obstetric and gynecological care using accepted standards of practice. Develop care plans, perform physical exams, diagnose, treat, or refer patients as needed.
- Hospitalize patients requiring inpatient care and provide obstetric and gynecological care during hospitalization according to ACOG standards.
- Consult with other physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, support staff, patients, and families. Make referrals as necessary while maintaining responsibility for ongoing care.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic gynecological and obstetric surgical procedures, minimally invasive or traditional.
- Enter into collaborative agreements with SJH midlevel providers including midwives.
- Participate in health promotion and disease prevention activities.
- Support mid-level providers in supervision and consultation.
- Participate in quality improvement activities.
- Attend SJH activities, in-services, and meetings as required.
- Complete records accurately and promptly using the EMR system.
- Maintain and update knowledge and skills to meet hospital, state, organizational, and licensure requirements.
- Follow Obstetrics Department protocols and guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chairman or Vice President of Physician Services to ensure excellent healthcare delivery.
