Position Summary:
This position maintains the surgical laboratory facility by stocking, cleaning, organizing, and performing daily, weekly, or monthly tasks as assigned. The student worker supports animal care, assists in research involving shelter animals, collects samples, administers treatments, communicates with investigators and sponsors, and performs husbandry duties such as feeding, watering, exercising, and cleaning.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain the surgical laboratory facility by stocking, cleaning, organizing and performing daily, weekly or monthly tasks as assigned. (40%)
- Animal care including monitoring physical health, managing shelter animals, assisting research, collecting blood by venipuncture, collecting urine, administering treatments, and performing husbandry duties such as feeding, watering, exercising and cleaning. (40%)
- Professionally communicate with investigators, sponsors, and colleagues regarding workflow, time limitations, and project status while maintaining a positive attitude, calm demeanor, and attention to detail. (10%)
- Other duties as assigned. (10%)

Relevant / Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:
- Current student with reliable transportation or close proximity.
- Animal handling experience.
- Enrolled in the graduate veterinary curriculum or pre-vet undergraduate curriculum.
- Walk/handle large dogs up to 90 lbs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:
- Experience and willingness to handle multiple species of animals including canine, feline, rodents, and avian.
- Effective communication, accurate documentation, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in sometimes-stressful environments.
- Critical thinking while carrying out instructions.
- Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Basic computer knowledge in MSWord and Excel.
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged standing, crouching or kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds.
- May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
- Dealing with stressful situations.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects.
- Wear protective gear, including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, and safety goggles.
- May need to work for long periods with arms extended.
