Job summary

The State of Maine is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Instructor to provide professional services to blind and visually impaired clients across multiple counties. You will assess, teach safe independent travel, and coordinate with cross‑agency teams to support education and employment outcomes.

Lo​cation is the Bangor Career Center with frequent regional travel; candidates must hold a degree in Orientation and Mobility and certification (or eligibility) within six months.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility (required)
• Certification as Orientation and Mobility Specialist (or eligible within 6 months)
• Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills

Responsibilities

• Assess clients and determine feasibility of orientation and mobility training.
• Instruct individuals who are blind or visually impaired to travel safely and independently.
• Consult with DOE, DHHS, CDS, DVR and related professionals to coordinate referrals.
• Prepare evaluations, plans and case notes documenting client needs.
• Travel regionally to serve Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock and Washington Counties.
