Job summary

Department of Labor - Bureau: Rehabilitation Services, Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired- Assistive Technology Specialist- Orientation and Mobility Instructor. Bangor, ME role focused on teaching safe travel and independence to blind or visually impaired individuals across multiple counties.

You will assess impairment levels, provide consultations, and coordinate referrals with DOE, DHHS, CDS, DVR and related professionals, while documenting needs through evaluations and case notes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Orientation and Mobility and two years of experience, or a Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility.
• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (eligible within six months).
• Preferred dual certifications (O&M and CVRT, TVI, CRC, CATIS, or CLVT).

Responsibilities

• Determines feasibility of orientation and mobility training for clients and sets goals.
• Instructs clients who are blind or visually impaired to travel safely and independently.
• Collaborates with DOE, DHHS, CDS, DVR and blindness professionals to coordinate referrals.
• Provides pre-employment transition services and youth transition services as per laws and policies.
• Writes evaluations, plans and case notes documenting client needs.
