Ettinger Engineering Associates (EEA), a premier MEP/FP, civil, sustainability, and field verification engineering firm based in midtown Manhattan, is seeking a NYC Special Inspector / Code Inspector with specialization in civil, structural, energy, envelope, or multiple inspection categories.

The role is ideal for candidates with strong experience in inspections, construction oversight, NYC DOB compliance, and broader building code / field enforcement work. Candidates with civil or structural PE licensure, ICC / ACI / AWS certifications, NYC Special Inspection experience, or NYS Building Safety Inspector / Code Enforcement Official credentials are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform special inspections in accordance with NYC Building Code Chapter 17, including applicable TR1 and TR8 categories.
  • Perform and document civil, structural, energy, envelope, and related field inspections for construction compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections across New York City projects.
  • Document findings, discrepancies, corrective items, and construction progress using standardized report formats and checklists.
  • Coordinate with project teams, including contractors, architects, engineers, owners, developers, and DOB representatives.
  • Ensure timely completion of inspection reports, follow-up communications, and closeout documentation.
  • Advise design and construction teams on compliance strategies and inspection readiness.
  • Maintain records to support EEA’s Class 1 Special Inspection Agency accreditation.
  • Support civil-site inspection services, including SWPPP-related erosion and sediment control observations, site drainage reviews, and construction-phase civil compliance documentation.
  • Support inspections and documentation related to backflow prevention device installation, legalization, and coordination with applicable approval processes.
  • Support adjacent field verification services where qualified, including energy-code inspections, open wall inspections, envelope observations, air-sealing observations, blower door testing, duct leakage testing, commissioning support, or sustainability-related site verification.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, construction management, architecture, or a related field preferred.
  • 2–5+ years of experience performing building inspections, construction inspections, code inspections, construction administration, or engineering/construction project work in NYC or the surrounding region.
  • Familiarity with NYC DOB special inspection procedures, TR1/TR8 requirements, and NYC Building Code requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of construction practices, approved drawings, specifications, and field documentation requirements.
  • Excellent communication, report writing, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple project assignments, and communicate clearly with project teams.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
Strongly Preferred Credentials / Experience
  • Civil or Structural Professional Engineer license.
  • NYC Special Inspection experience.
  • ICC certification(s) in applicable special inspection categories.
  • ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector or Associate Concrete Construction Special Inspector.
  • AWS Certified Welding Inspector or AWS Certified Associate Welding Inspector.
  • ICC Commercial Mechanical or similar trade/category certification.
  • NYS Building Safety Inspector certification.
  • OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety minimum.
  • Fall protection, scaffolding/ladders, work-zone safety, or similar construction safety training.
  • Experience with SWPPP inspections, erosion and sediment control inspections, civil-site observations, or sitework compliance.
  • Experience with backflow prevention device inspection, installation documentation, or legalization processes.
