Job summary

United Health Services (UHS) in New York's Southern Tier is seeking a Nurse Unit Coordinator for the ICU at UHS Wilson Medical Center. The role coordinates daily operations, mentors staff, and supports quality improvement initiatives under the Nursing Manager.

The position emphasizes staffing oversight, clinical leadership, on‑site collaboration, and ensuring high‑quality patient care with a patient‑centered approach in a busy ICU environment.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
• Bachelors in Nursing or evidence of planned completion within two years.
• Three years of clinical nursing experience; supervisory exposure preferred.
• Current New York State RN license and CPR within 3 months.

Responsibilities

• Determines staffing needs and schedules for 24 hour coverage of patient care needs.
• Supervises the assignment of patients and allocation of nursing staff according to patient needs, acuity, and staff mix.
• Functions as a clinical consultant for patients, families, staff, physicians and other hospital departments.
• Troubleshoots clinical and operational matters collaboratively.
• Participates in recruitment, interviewing and hiring of staff for the operating room.
• Plans, coordinates and participates in clinical education including orientation of new staff and education to meet learning needs of staff.
• Provides direction and assistance to students and faculty.
• Mentors and coaches staff toward professional growth and development.
• Completes performance appraisal process for technical and support staff as assigned.
• Assists with performance appraisals for RNs and others as requested.
• Provides recognition and retention activities in conjunction with the Nurse Manager.
• Monitors and ensures staff/unit compliance with hospital policies and standards.
• Participates in the development and implementation of department performance improvement plans.
• Executes duties of the Nurse Manager in their absence and covers on-call as needed.
• Maintains a clinical practice by providing direct patient care when needed.
• Oversees supply requisitions and inventories equipment and supplies.

Sign On Bonus Eligible, up to $25,000! UHS Wilson Medical Center has an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Unit Coordinator to support our Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The ICU Nurse Unit Coordinator plays a key role in coordinating the daily operations of the unit while promoting a caring, healing, and patient-centered environment. In this role, you will function as a clinical resource and role model for staff, monitor assignments and performance, identify potential operational or patient care concerns, and actively participate in Quality Improvement initiatives. This position works under the direction of the Nursing Manager and in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, the Code of Ethics for Nurses, and UHS and Nursing Division policies and philosophy.

• Primary Department, Division, or Unit: Intensive Care Unit, UHS Wilson Medical Center
• Primary Work Shift: Day Rotational
• Regular Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40
• Compensation Range: $44.77 - $67.15 per hour, depending on experience

Essential Functions

• Determines staffing needs and schedules for 24 hour coverage of patient care needs.
• Supervises the assignment of patients and allocation of nursing staff according to patient needs, patient acuity, and staff skill mix.
• Functions as a clinical consultant for patients, families, department staff, physicians and other hospital departments.
• Troubleshoots clinical and operational matters collaboratively.
• Participates in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of staff for the operating room.
• Plans, coordinates and participates in clinical education including orientation of new staff and education to meet learning needs of staff.
• Provides direction and assistance to students and faculty.
• Mentors and coaches staff toward professional growth and development.
• Completes performance appraisal process for technical and support staff (i.e. assistants, aides, unit secretaries) as assigned in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.
• Assists with performance appraisals for RNs and others as requested.
• Provides recognition and retention activities in conjunction with the Nurse Manager.
• Monitors and ensures staff/unit compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements and professional standards.
• Participates in the review and revision of department policies and procedures.
• Acts as a liaison between staff and management.
• Participates in the development and implementation of the department performance improvement plan in conjunction with the Nurse Manager and others as relevant.
• Executes the duties and responsibilities of the Nurse Manager in his/her absence.
• Assumes “on call” responsibilities when covering for the Nurse Manager.
• Maintains a clinical practice by providing direct patient care when needed.
• Oversees the preparation of supply requisitions and inventories equipment and supplies.

Non-Essential Functions

• Participates in the Clinical Ladder Program as knowledge and expertise develops.
• Will perform other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

• Minimum Required:
  • A graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
  • Bachelors in Nursing or evidence of planned completion within two (2) years
  • Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience
• Preferred:
  • Bachelors in Nursing
  • Previous experience in relevant nursing practice setting
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role

License/Certification

• Minimum Required:
  • Current New York State Registered Nurse License
  • CPR within 3 months of hire
  • Completion of professional certification in the relevant specialty practice as soon as eligible (generally after 2 years of experience in the specialty)
• Preferred:
  • Current professional certification in the relevant specialty
