The Nursing Supervisor role supports Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES)

Care in PES is delivered by an interdisciplinary team which includes Nursing, Social Work, Recreational and Occupational Therapists, Medical Staff.

Responsibilities*

To assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning and managing the unit and the provision of patient care.

To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education, and research.

To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center's mission and goal statements.

Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director.

Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.

Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff, as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.

Responsibilities Include

Personnel Management:

Plan, assign, and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.

Participate in interviewing, selecting, and orienting nursing and support staff.

Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.

Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of individual performance plans.

Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.

Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of the leadership team as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.

Clinical Practice

To provide clinical assessment. Mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of staff.

Management Of Clinical Area

Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.

Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.

Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.

Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.

Participate in the monitoring of department payroll and commodity expenditures.

Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.

Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews, and reference checks. Collaborate with the Educational Coordinator to implement competency-based evaluation.

Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care.

Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance And Research

Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.

Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by the unit nursing staff.

Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable

Required Qualifications*

Required Educational Requirements

Applicant must meet one of the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing OR
  • Associate's degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum two (2) years (within the last 5 years) RN experience in acute psychiatric patient settings or emergency room settings.
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), for the list, visit here.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous supervisory/management experience in inpatient psychiatry.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
  • Knowledge of Lean principles.
  • Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Experience with Med/Surg acute inpatient populations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability, including charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, or other management experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Clinical Nurse Director, Supervisor, Unit leadership, Administrators, Physicians, Peers, and Subordinates.
  • Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be ability to extract data from University-supported computer databases. High level of self-motivation and commitment to improving patient outcomes and the development of staff.
  • Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Administrators, Physicians, Peers, and other Staff.
  • Previous acute care Psychiatric patient experience


Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 40 hours/week

Shift: Primarily mid-day shift with rotation to off shift as needed. Weekend-On Call Schedule

Expected staffing component: occasional staffing

Location: University Hospital- Psychiatric Emergency Services

Background Screening
