Reporting to the Associate Director of Nursing Informatics, you will drive informatics-enabled practice change, optimize Epic, and collaborate with clinicians, Epic leadership, analysts, and trainers to design content, standardize workflows, train staff, and communicate updates.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Nursing and/or Health Informatics required. Informatics preferred.
  • Registered Nurse with 5+ years of healthcare required.
  • End user Epic experience required.
  • Oncology experience in ambulatory or inpatient preferred.
  • Previous nursing informatics experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing informatics support to Epic governance and workflow design.
  • Collaborate with Epic leadership, analysts, and nursing stakeholders to analyze workflows and requirements.
  • Represent nursing on cross-functional workgroups and committees to improve usability, safety, and quality.
  • Support investigation, testing, and validation of system and workflow issues; assess impacts of changes using data.
  • Provide input on clinical, regulatory, and operational documentation and partner on metrics and data interpretation for improvements.
  • Support development of end-user education and communicate Epic updates at forums.

Job description

The Nursing Informatics Specialist supports Nursing and Epic Operations in ensuring clinical information systems align with DFCI nursing standards and strategic goals, with emphasis on our transition to the BILH Epic instance. Reporting to the Associate Director of Nursing Informatics, this role supports the professional practice model and shared governance through informatics-enabled practice change. The specialist contributes to stabilization, optimization, and continuous improvement of Epic and related systems, collaborating with nursing, physician, pharmacy, Epic leadership, analysts, and trainers on clinical content design, workflow standardization, training, and communication.

The role helps identify issues, supports mitigation strategies, and contributes data-informed recommendations, serving as a nursing informatics liaison between the Epic program and clinical stakeholders. In support of institutional quality and safety priorities, the specialist participates in initiatives that evaluate interventions, support practice changes, and leverage data and technology to improve patient outcomes, safety, efficiency, and clinician experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing informatics support to Epic governance, help guide workflow design, clinical content, build priorities, and future development to align with nursing practice, regulations, and operational goals.
  • Collaborate with Epic leadership, analysts, and nursing stakeholders to analyze workflows, gather requirements, and support safe, efficient, standardized Epic solutions.
  • Represent nursing on specialized and cross-functional workgroups and committees, advocating for nursing interests and identifying opportunities to improve usability, safety, and quality.
  • Support investigation, testing, and validation of system and workflow issues; assess impacts and effectiveness of changes using data and feedback, escalating complex risks as appropriate.
  • Provide input on clinical, regulatory, and operational documentation, and partner with analysts and reporting teams on metrics, report development, and data interpretation for improvement initiatives.
  • Support development of end-user education and communication materials and present Epic-related updates and recommendations at nursing and stakeholder forums.
  • Support technology and clinical documentation policy efforts, inpatient integration into nursing informatics structures and shared governance, and ongoing adoption of Epic and informatics best practices.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Maintain strong knowledge of Epic and related clinical systems to support effective use and optimization.
  • Support the use of health IT to advance nursing practice and technology-enabled patient safety initiatives.
  • Identify and clarify key issues and priorities, helping align stakeholders on recommendations in a highly matrixed environment.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to address clinical and technical challenges.
  • Apply knowledge of nursing clinical practice to ensure informatics solutions are safe, relevant, and aligned with standards.
Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Nursing and/or Health Informatics required. Informatics preferred.
  • Registered Nurse with 5+ years of experience in healthcare required.
  • End user Epic experience required.
  • Previous nursing informatics experience preferred.
  • Oncology experience in ambulatory or inpatient preferred.
License/Certification/Registration Required:
  • Current registered nurse licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
