ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES:

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four (4) acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 600,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion. Through academic affiliations with UCLA, USC, and CDU, DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. MANAGEMENT APPRAISAL OF PERFORMANCE PLAN (MAPP):

This position is subject to the provisions of the MAPP. Initial salary placement and subsequent salary adjustments will follow MAPP guidelines and regulations.

DEFINITION:

Under general direction, administers the total education program, including multiple major programs or organizational areas of an operating unit, or the education program in a School of Nursing. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, staffing, budgeting, directing, and controlling the achievement of short- and long-term objectives.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
  1. Plans, organizes, directs, and leads nursing education services to achieve organizational goals, including programs that integrate practice and educational programs to implement new healthcare practices, trends, or technology.
  2. Directs the educational curriculum design at a School of Nursing, as needed.
  3. Establishes policies for program emphasis and operating guidelines, including setting goals.
  4. Determines organizational structure, operations, instructional design methods, and standards, making adjustments as needed.
  5. Develops educational programs based on quality assurance data to evaluate and monitor care quality.
  6. Prepares and defends budget and manpower requests.
  7. Recruits, hires, orients, and supervises nursing faculty; evaluates performance.
  8. Interprets and communicates nursing and organizational philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  9. Ensures compliance with licensure, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
  10. Manages personnel matters and participates in strategic planning.
  11. Participates in policy, procedures, and standards formulation.
  12. Travels within Los Angeles County as necessary.
