Job summary

Fairview Health Services is seeking a Nursing Assistant for the SAU/PACU at St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, MN. The role supports pre- and post-operative care, performs vital checks, and documents care in the EHR under RN supervision.

This casual position (.01 FTE) offers 8-hour day/evening shifts with no weekends, and a comprehensive benefits package. Qualifications include BLS and on-track nursing assistant training or equivalent experience.

Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification. Ontrack participants must be able to obtain BLS for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.
• AND One or more of the following:
• Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview sponsored Nursing Assistant program.
• Six months of direct care experience in a long term, home care or acute care setting (e.g., Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant or Emergency Room Technician).
• Current enrollment in an LPN, RN or Nurse Practitioner program, with one semester of clinical rotation completed.
• Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire (not required to be maintained if transferring within nursing roles).

Responsibilities

• Performs patient care duties for patients in SAU and Phase 1 & 2 recovery, including vital signs checks, bladder scanning, blood sugar testing, and documentation.
• Reports patient care data and progress to the supervising RN.
• Demonstrates commitment to patient care principles and holistic health models.
• Communicates with patient, family, and health care team members; reinforces patient education.
• Documents patient information in EHR or other systems per standards; maintains compliance with laws and policies.
• Participates in improvements and best practices within the unit.

Fairview is looking for a Nursing Assistant on the Surgical Assessment/Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (SAU/PACU) at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood, MN.

About this Unit

The St. John’s Surgery Admit and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (SAU/PACU) is dedicated to guiding patients through every step of their surgical experience—from pre-operative preparation to safe recovery and discharge home. Our team provides specialized care in both pre-and post-operative care, including patient assessment, education, and recovery following anesthesia.

Responsibilities

A member of the interdependent team led by a designated RN, is accountable to perform patient care duties and activities for a group of patients in both SAU (preop) and Phase 1 & 2 of recovery. Performs such care as vital sign checks, bladder scanning, blood sugar testing, documentation of cares provided. Reports patient care data and progress of outcomes to designated RN.

• Demonstrates commitment to the universal guiding principles of the patient care model in order to achieve the M Health Fairview Nursing vision.
• Supports the Nursing Process to achieve outcome focused patient care. Supports holistic nursing theory based on Watson's theory of caring aligning with the practice standards of the American Holistic Nurses' Association and the nursing patient care model (Professional Partnership Model) in order to achieve the M Health Fairview Nursing vision.
• Communicates accurately and effectively with patient/family and health care team members. Reinforces patient education as directed by clinical staff.
• Achieves customer service excellence by understanding the needs of all internal and external customers, patients, families, physicians and the interdependent team.
• Documents patient information in EHR and/or other electronic system in accordance with program standards, department policies/procedures.
• Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
• Actively participates in creating and implementing improvements.

Required Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification. Ontrack participants much be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.
• AND One of more of the following:
• Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview sponsored Nursing Assistant program.
• Or
• Six months of recent direct care experience in a long term, home care or acute care setting. (Appropriate roles may include, Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant or Emergency Room Technician)
• Or
• Current enrollment in an LPN, RN or Nurse Practitioner program, and completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program
• Or
• Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Assistant or Nursing Station Tech or Nursing Station Attendant position.
