U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ James H Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center seeks a Nursing Assistant to support licensed nursing staff in outpatient and inpatient settings.

You will assist with basic patient care, hygiene, mobility, and daily activities under supervision, contributing to plan-of-care execution. Role requires the ability to communicate with patients and the healthcare team, meet physical demands, and participate in unit-level improvements.

The Nursing Assistant in this role provides care under supervision and refers issues/questions to supervisors - higher graded NAs - or other healthcare professionals.

• In addition to the above - applicant must demonstrate the following
• Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patient/residents
• Ability to observe patients/residents physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner
• Ability to properly use equipment - materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan - continuous passive motion device - blood glucose monitoring machine - specimen collection etc
• Ability to communicate effectively with patient / residents - their families and other health professionals
• GS- 5 One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge - skills - and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignments -OR- successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree
• In addition the above - applicant must demonstrate the following
• Knowledge - Skills and Abilities: Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patient/resident with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital - long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse / Licensed Practical Nurse Ability to communicate orally with patients/ residents - families - interdisciplinary team and other personnel
• This includes serving as a preceptor to new nursing assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/ assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance

• Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult - age 18 - to the elderly adult - age 65 and over
• James H Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center (JHQVAMC) is a major inter disciplinary teaching facility - serving medical - surgical - and neurological inpatients and outpatients
• There is a large outpatient psychiatric population - with admissions for medical comorbidities
• This position requires visual acuity - keen hearing - clear distinctive speech - and manual dexterity
• This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking - standing - stooping - sitting - bending - pulling - lifting more than 10 pounds - and pushing
• Transferring patients and objects may be required
• The NA may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures
• The NA may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium - dementia - or psychiatric disorders
• The NA must be a mature -flexible - sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations - able to shift priorities based on patient needs

• Reusable Medical Equipment: Have documented training in the setup - reprocessing and maintenance of specific equipment
• Validation of competency will be done - minimally - on an annual basis
• Will suspend the reuse of any RME if he/she/they suspect that the device was not properly cleaned - disinfected or sterilized according to the SOP and manufacturer's guidelines
• GS-5 Clinical Nursing Practice: Respond to patient calls for assistance in a timely manner
• Ensure proper identification of patient per policy before administering care
• Administration: Report to the Nurse Manager or designee any failure to comply with established policy or procedure
• Assist with answering the phone conveying timely messages to the appropriate staff - placing calls/pages as needed
• Research: Participate in the accurate collection of data as instructed by the Nurse Manager or designee
• Participate in Performance Improvement activities at the unit level
• Education: Demonstrate accountability for on-going education requirements as required by facility and assigned unit
• Reusable Medical Equipment: Will have an understanding of the importance in reprocessing of RME and the significant impact on our Veteran population through the risk of infectious disease
