Job summary

Wisconsin Department of Corrections is seeking a Certified Nursing Assistant to provide essential health care support in a correctional infirmary or health services unit. The role includes assisting nurses and physicians, helping with daily living activities, recording vitals, and performing minor procedures as needed.

The position requires BLS/CPR, AED training, and the ability to work up to 16 hours per day and more than 40 hours per week as needed.

Job description

Position Summary

This position assists in providing health care and services to Persons in Our Care in a correctional institution infirmary or health services unit. Duties include assisting Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, and Physicians with direct patient care, including tasks such as: assisting patients in activities of daily living, hygiene and treatments; determining and recording vitals; and assisting in minor procedures. This position will perform patient record related clerical functions and other assigned duties in maintaining day-to-day functioning in a 24/7-unit operation.

Salary Information

This position is in pay schedule and range 06-12 with a starting pay of $27.77/hour. Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire. A probationary period is required.

Pay rates for individuals with prior state service shall be set in accordance with their full years of state service.

Pay is expected to progress with full years of state service:

0 Years of Service $27.77/hour

1 Year of Service $28.34/hour

2 Years of Service $28.92/hour

3 Years of Service $29.51/hour

5 Years of Service $30.08/hour

10 Years of Service $30.67/hour

15 Years of Service $31.25/hour

Job Details

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e. a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency of employment.

The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

This position is not eligible for remote work. This position is FLSA Non-Exempt.

NOTE: Must be certified in basic CPR/AED and maintain certification and have the ability to work up to 16 hours per day and more than 40 hours per week on any shift based on daily operational needs. This may include weekends, holidays, and on-call hours.

If you are currently working under contract for a staffing agency at the Department of Corrections, you must have worked at least 720 hours of your contract.

Qualifications

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Applicants must possess by time of hire and maintain certification in BLS by the American Heart Association and training in the use of the AED and have the ability to perform BLS and/or first aid to prevent loss of life and relieve suffering until appropriate care arrives.

Applicants will be assessed on relevant experience, including the following:

  • Using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), performing CPR, and performing First Aid.
  • Making accurate and complete observations and assessing patient status regarding changes in physical and mental condition of patients.
  • Initiating action in emergency situations
  • Being registered or eligible for registration as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in the State of Wisconsin.
