Summary

Nursing Assistants at this grade level function as members of the nursing care team, assisting licensed nursing staff in caring for patients receiving preventative, acute, subacute, chronic, maintenance, and hospice care. They typically handle more complex nursing needs, which can vary from predictable to unpredictable, and also take on peer education and mentorship roles.

Duties

All duties are performed under close supervision with appropriate training and competencies, including:

• Utilizing glucose monitoring machines to receive glucose readings for veterans.
• Providing direct care for complex veterans.
• Observing subtle changes in residents’ conditions, such as behavior shifts, mood, skin coloring, and appetite.
• Documenting care, observations, and responses accurately.
• Performing oral and nasopharyngeal suctioning.
• Administering complete tracheostomy care, including suctioning.
• Monitoring and documenting patient intake and output.
• Performing nursing procedures within scope, such as enemas, catheterization, colostomy care, skin care, simple dressings, and application of braces and prosthetic devices.
• Engaging in small group activities with veterans per treatment plans.
• Promoting resident independence through respect, setting limits, and individualized treatment.
• Participating in treatment planning meetings.
• Using equipment to support self-care, like lift devices and wandering systems.
• Communicating patient information to the treatment team and participating in care planning.
• Entering resident condition data into charts using appropriate formats.
• Maintaining a clean and safe environment.

Work Schedule

Full-Time, 8/12 hour shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Flexibility to work other units or clinics as needed.
