Job summary

Katy ISD Health Services in Katy, Texas is seeking a Substitute Nurse to provide comprehensive health services within the school setting. You will report to the Director of Health Services and respond to health needs while supporting wellness programs across campuses.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies, plans, intervenes, and evaluates student health concerns, including physical and mental health needs and injuries.
  • Possesses strong communication and intervention skills.
  • Possesses strong physical assessment skills with the ability to evaluate health and safety measures in the school environment.
  • Provides health assessments, including screenings, for health factors impacting student education. This includes mandated screenings such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, and acanthosis.
  • Provides chronic disease management and education, including training and supervising designated school personnel to perform specialized procedures which serve the needs of children with disabilities and/or health conditions in the school setting.
  • Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through immunization programs, early intervention, surveillance, reporting, and follow-up of contagious diseases.
  • Directly and indirectly provides health education, health resources, and curriculum recommendations. Participates as the health specialist on school teams and promotes a healthy school environment conducive to learning.
  • Provides health counseling for staff and provides leadership and/or support for staff wellness programs.
  • Coordinates school/community health activities and serves as liaison between school, community, and health care providers.
  • Assists the Health Services Department with developing, evaluating, and revising health policies, procedures, goals, and objectives for the school district, in order to continually improve the quality of health services in Katy ISD.
  • Utilizes equipment and technology for the delivery of health care services.

Duty Days: As Needed

Wage/Hour Status: Substitute Salary

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of three years nursing experience or Associate Degree in nursing with a minimum of five years nursing experience, pediatrics or school nursing preferred

Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas

Primary Purpose:

Function as a health care provider and manager in the school setting and implement and maintain a comprehensive health program that advocates for the health rights of children and promotes an optimal level of wellness for the students, staff, and community

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Equipment Used:

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermoscan, basic clinic equipment, equipment used with medically fragile students, personal computer, and copier.

Working Conditions:

Responsibilities require contact with sick and/or injured person(s), which may include exposure to bodily fluids, disruptive behavior, and communicable disease. There may be exposure to potentially hazardous medical equipment and/or chemicals. Mental demands require emotional control under stress.
