Job summary

University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) — School of Medicine's General Clinic Research Center seeks a Nurse Research I, MRI to provide overnight patient care for adults and pediatrics in research settings. Responsible for data collection and specimen handling under GAC protocols, with a focus on patients with substance use disorders.

Required RN license in Maryland and one year of RN experience; overnight, weekend, and shift work may be required.

Qualifications

  • One year of experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Experience caring for patients with substance use disorder strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in planning and implementation of clinical protocols in accordance with the research protocol.
  • Assists with or establishes data collection systems and performs data collection according to the research protocol.
  • Collects, processes, and provides for storage and/or delivery of biologic specimens.
  • Carries out research and patient care procedures according to the protocol and institutional policies; assesses opioid withdrawal.
  • Performs phlebotomy, IV infusions, monitoring of vital signs, administration of research meds, including chemotherapy, and other procedures as required.
  • Documents data collection and patient care according to established standards.
  • Monitors and records patient response to treatment and communicates study data to investigators and team; maintains source documentation.
  • Performs inpatient care for GCRC research subjects during evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Help to facilitate study progress, including assisting with or scheduling patients.
  • Point of Care and Quality Control.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine - General Clinic Research Center (GCRC) is currently recruiting for a Nurse Research I, MRI. Several current studies require overnight and weekend coverage. This RN position is primarily for overnights, including some weekends. Experience with patients with substance use disorder is strongly preferred. Under the supervision of the GCRC Nurse Manager, is responsible for the safe delivery of nursing care for both adult and pediatric research patients. Responsible for data and biologic specimen collection in the GCRC and other clinical areas as required for the implementation of GAC approved protocols. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to provide age/developmentally appropriate care. Adheres to NCRR, University, IRB, hospital, and unit policies, nursing procedures, standards, and practices. Overtime, weekend, on-call, and shift work may be required.

This is a Full-Time, Contractual position.

Essential Functions
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of clinical protocols in accordance with the research protocol.
  • Assists with or establishes data collection systems and performs data collection according to the research protocol.
  • Collects, processes, and provides for storage and/or delivery of biologic specimens.
  • Carries out research and patient care procedures according to the research protocol and institutional policies, procedures, and standards. Assesses participant’s opioid withdrawal using COWs, SOWs, and pupillometry.
  • Performs phlebotomy, initiation of intravenous infusions, monitoring of vital signs, administration of research and other medications, including chemotherapy, and other specialized procedures (i.e., biopsies) as required by the research protocol.
  • Documents data collection and patient care according to established standards.
  • Monitors and records patient response to treatment and communicates study data and results to investigators and other members of the research team; maintains source documentation.
  • Performs inpatient care for GCRC research subjects as assigned on evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Help to facilitate study progress, including assisting with or scheduling patients.
  • Point of Care and Quality Control.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience

One (1) year of experience as a Registered Nurse. Experience caring for patients with substance use disorder strongly preferred.

Licensure/Certification

Currently licensed with the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses as a Registered Nurse under Maryland State Law.

Other

May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the Maryland Nurse Practice Act for Registered Nurses. Thorough knowledge of the principles of aseptic technique and infection control including blood and body fluid precautions. Ability to perform extensive standing and walking. Thorough knowledge, skill, and ability to perform various medical and nursing procedures and to operate medical equipment. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to gather and interpret quantitative and qualitative data. Ability to operate computers and other office equipment. Skill and ability to interact with the public, health care providers, agencies, and facilities. Thorough knowledge of and compliance with confidentiality of records and communications regarding clients.

Other

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Condition Of Employment

Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. Overtime, weekend, on-call and shift work may be required in some positions.

Hiring Range

$66,000 - $88,000, commensurate with education and experience
