Job Description:
Working with Kansas City area elementary schools, the Score 1 for Health PRN nurse works within a team to ensure successful delivery of elementary school health screening events. As a part of the team, the Score 1 for Health PRN nurse will conduct and ensure follow-up screenings get completed for qualifying children, cultivate alliances with schools, and effectively promote child health benefits of the program. Communicates effectively through written, phone, and face-to-face methods with parent/guardian and school nurses; and contributes to the advancement of the program and departmental operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs school health screenings on children, K-8th grade, in the school setting
- Instructs and supervises nursing, allied health, medical and dental students in performing screenings
- Ensures timely follow-up communications with families qualifying for services
- Organizes referral caseload
- Facilitates follow-up contact with families
- Serves as a resource and liaison with school professionals, parents, and community programs
- Acts as a conduit of change in promoting healthy lifestyles
- Represents the University favorably and in accordance with established Core Values and expectations
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the organization
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing. Extensive knowledge and experience may substitute for education
- Three years experience in pediatric, community, public, or school nursing. Experience in patient education, diabetes education, health promotion, social services desired. One year experience working with low-income, multi-cultural families preferred and highly desirable
- Must be proficient with MS office (Word, Excel, Access)
- Must have excellent time management skills, be able to work independently, productively, and with little to no supervision
- Must be able to provide own transportation to elementary schools when needed
- Must be able to commit to a designated mandatory schedule of screening dates, report additional hours/dates availability up to 6 weeks ahead, and have ability to add hours as able upon departmental and university requests to meet the needs of the institution
- Flexibility in work hours, due to early evening activities, including attendance and phone work
- Strong skills in face-to-face health assessments for school-aged child, demonstrated attributes in displaying compassion and developing trust while interacting with all constituents
- Strong organizational, written communication and health education instruction skills essential
- Must maintain an active MO and KS license for registered nurses or be able to obtain bi-state licensure
